FC Barcelona star Fermin Lopez delivered yet another huge Champions League performance against Newcastle United and, in doing so, offered the perfect explanation for why his market valuation has recently exploded.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Barcelona midfielder’s display against the Premier League side fully justified the recent €100 million valuation placed on him by Transfermarkt. The report even outlines just how extraordinary his rise has been, pointing out that as recently as June 2023, his value on the same platform stood at just €300k.

Against Newcastle, Fermin once again showed exactly why his stock is rising so rapidly. His goal, Barcelona’s fourth of the night, captured the essence of his game: instinct, desire, tactical intelligence, sharp movement, and calm finishing.

Hansi Flick was especially pleased with the goal because it came directly from something the coach had emphasised at half-time, reminding the players to apply a move they had worked on in the final training session. When the moment arrived, Raphinha dropped the ball off, and Fermin burst into space like a striker before finishing decisively past Aaron Ramsdale.

The numbers behind his campaign make the story even stronger. With that strike against Newcastle, Fermin moved to six goals in this season’s Champions League, making him the most prolific midfielder in the competition among teams still involved.

PSG’s Vitinha also has six, but needed 12 matches to reach that total, while Fermin has done it in just nine games.

Fermin is now Barcelona’s top scorer in this season’s Champions League, ahead of attackers like Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford, who each have five goals. Across all competitions, he has now amassed 12 goals and 16 assists, extraordinary numbers for a midfielder who still contributes defensively as well.

For Barcelona, this was more than just another impressive performance. It was another reminder that Fermin is no longer merely a useful squad option or emerging talent. On nights like this, he looks every bit like the €100 million midfielder his valuation now suggests he is.
