Stoke City host Charlton Athletic on Saturday, September 5th, with the match set to kick off at 12:30, as Football League World takes a closer look at the players set to miss out on this clash through suspension or injury.

Stoke finally grabbed their first points of the campaign on Tuesday night, grinding out a 1-0 home victory over Norwich City, as Mark Robins gets one of the biggest wins for the club since arriving in North Staffordshire over 18 months ago.

The former Coventry City boss has been under increased pressure lately after three defeats on the spin to open the new Championship season, as the 56-year-old looks to target back-to-back league wins for the first time since the start of January.

Charlton, on the other hand, are flying high towards the top of the second tier table, winning their opening three league games over Derby County, West Ham United, and Preston North End, before claiming a point in a 1-1 draw away to West Bromwich Albion.

Head coach Nathan Jones will be more than keen to keep this positive momentum going when he returns to face his former side this weekend, as FLW takes a look at every player set to miss this feisty affair.

Svante Ingelsson

Svante Ingelsson joined Stoke from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer window for around £1 million, with the Swede expected to provide competition in the middle of the park to the likes of Ethan Galbraith, Djibril Soumare, Tomas Rigo, and Ben Pearson.

After picking up a second yellow card in the Potters’ 3-1 loss, he hasn’t been involved in a matchday squad since due to a fresh injury, and is expected to play no part in this fixture.

Junior Tchamadeu

Junior Tchamadeu has yet to make an appearance this campaign after limping off with an injury in a pre-season friendly with Crewe Alexandra, with his recovery taking slightly longer than expected.

The Cameroonian isn’t far away from full training, but this clash is set to be one too soon for him.

Aaron Cresswell

Aaron Cresswell, like Tchamadeu, has yet to make a single appearance in a matchday squad this season after extending his contract for a further year in the Potteries at the end of last season.

The former West Ham United defender, who has been capped three times by England previously, is set to be out for the foreseeable future, and there is no chance he will feature in this game.

Ben Gibson

Ben Gibson has been in and out of the Stoke side ever since Robins took to the helm in January 2025, with the former Burnley and Norwich City defender far from one of his first-choice options in the back line.

The 33-year-old is serving a concussion protocol and, as a result, will be absent for this fixture against the Addicks.

Ato Ampah is yet to make his senior debut for Stoke since joining from Chelsea in January 2026 for around £3 million, with an injury to his toe proving to be more complicated than those at the club had hoped, whilst a muscle strain in pre-season has only set him back further.

However, the winger is set to earn some minutes for the Under-21 side against Stockport County in the Premier League Cup on Friday night, as he finally looks to get up to speed.

The former Southampton right-back made 37 appearances in the Championship for the Addicks last campaign, and upon his eventual return to fitness, will have to compete with Danny McNamara for a place in the side, as this fixture may come one too soon for the 25-year-old.

Collins Sichenje

Kenyan defender Collins Sichenje was stretchered off just two minutes into Charlton's 5-1 defeat in the League Cup to Tottenham Hotspur last week, and is expected to be out of action for a considerable amount of time.

The 22-year-old has managed just ten appearances for the club across all competitions since joining from Serbian side Vojvodina in January 2026, and will have to wait a while to make his 11th.

Billy Koumetio

Billy Koumetio, like Sichenje, was taken off in the early stages of Charlton's defeat to Spurs last week, and has since missed the games against Preston and West Brom.

The French defender, formerly of Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers, joined in the summer from Dundee, but having sustained a problem with his hamstring, remains a doubt for this one.

Matty Godden

35-year-old striker Matty Godden is a player Robins will know well from their time together at Coventry City, with the 35-year-old playing a key role in the Sky Blues' rise from League One to the Championship and subsequently solidifying their place there.

However, having not featured in a matchday squad since the opening day against Derby due to a muscle injury, the veteran forward doesn't look likely to come back and haunt his former boss for this clash.

Charlie Kelman

Charlie Kelman endured a tough first year with Charlton last campaign following his move from Leyton Orient, scoring just seven goals in 36 games across all competitions for the Addicks.

He has yet to have the opportunity to add to that tally this campaign after suffering an injury during pre-season, and remains a doubt for this away fixture to Stoke.
