Whatever happens between now and the end of this season with Man Utd, this summer is guaranteed to be one of major change and upheaval.
Performances on the pitch have been abysmal, while the financial picture looks grim. Hundreds of staff members have been let go by co-owner Jim Ratcliffe in a bid to scrimp some change together. Times haven’t been this bleak at Old Trafford for a half century.
It’s clear that United are readying for a squad overhaul when the transfer window opens this June. There is a desperate need to get expensive contracts off the books to stay within PSR limits and keep the club solvent, and selling players appears to be a must before they can sign new ones.
At this stage just about anyone could be sold, including promising youngsters such as Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, although it seems more likely they will stay than go.
Mason Mount is another name who could leave after a disappointing few years at Old Trafford, but head coach Ruben Amorim appears to like the former Chelsea midfielder and could persist with him in his plans.
We’ve picked out a swathe of players the Portuguese tactician won’t mind departing The Red Devils in the very near future.
Despite regaining some form while on loan at Aston Villa, the door on Marcus Rashford’s Old Trafford career appears firmly shut. The manager doesn’t like the wide forward, the fans have turned on him, and his contract is extraordinarily large.
Rashford has done enough since January to earn an England re-call from Thomas Tuchel, which is a positive for United. He’s a more sellable asset now than he was before the move to Villa Park, and even if the Villans don’t take up the £40m option in the deal, another club could come in for him.
Another player who is playing better away from Man Utd, Antony has impressed on loan at Real Betis, registering four goal involvements in seven LaLiga appearances. He also has the same number of goals and assists in four Europa Conference League games.
Still, the Brazilian winger is nowhere near worth the £82m United paid Ajax for him back in 2022. Offloading him without taking a massive hit on their outlay will be nigh-on impossible, especially after Amorim said he struggled with the Premier League’s physicality. Not the greatest sales pitch.
When it emerged this week that Chelsea can get out of their obligation to buy Jadon Sancho by paying a £5m penalty fee, it seemed like that eventuality was a given. After an initial bright spell on loan at Stamford Bridge, the winger’s form has dipped and his long-term place in the team seems fragile.
However, the latest reports suggest that the Blues still intend on signing Sancho permanently for an agreed-upon £25m transfer fee. Meanwhile, Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly interested. That’s all great news for Man Utd, who just need the 25-year-old gone from the club.
One of many costly mistakes by Man Utd in recent years, Casemiro has aged out pretty badly since leaving Real Madrid for £60m (plus £10m in add-ons) in 2022. The Brazil international enjoyed one good season upon moving to Manchester, but has looked well past his best since then.
Amorim evidently has little use for the midfielder, handing him just six Premier League starts since replacing Ten Hag last November. The big question is, with two years left on his contract, is there a club willing to buy him this summer?
The Dutch left-back has spent the majority of his two years at United on the treatment table. He’s regained some form and fitness on loan with PSV Eindhoven, who have the option of buying him for £8m this summer.
It appears inevitable that Christian Eriksen will leave Old Trafford at the end of this season. The midfielder has hinted as much, suggesting he will be moving on when his deal runs out this year. “It’s the same principle as last time, the contract expires in the summer, so in my head I’m prepared to find something new,” the 33-year-old said last week.
Signed as a backup to Andre Onana last year, Altay Bayındır could be on his way out already. Amorim wants a new goalkeeper, according to MEN, and the Turkish shot stopper may look for regular gametime elsewhere ahead of the 2026 World Cup. He’s yet to make his Premier League bow, with all six of his appearances coming in the cup competitions and Europe.
Like Eriksen, Victor Lindelof looks set to be released at the end of his contract this year. The Sweden international has made just two league starts this season.
Jonny Evans is likely to call it a day at the end of the current campaign and retire from football at the age of 37. The veteran defender re-joined United in 2023.
It appears likely Tom Heaton will take the same course of action and retire this year. Like Evans, the 38-year-old came through the club’s academy before finding his way back late in his career. He’s been the third-choice goalkeeper since 2021.
Luke Shaw has spent 11 years at Man Utd. Where does the time go? We never got to see the full potential of the former Southampton player, although lately it feels like we never see him at all; he hasn’t started a game in 13 months. Finding suitors for the 29-year-old will be a tall task.
