Éric Cantona returned to the Croisette on Friday, taking the red carpet at the 79th Cannes Film Festival for the documentary Cantona, screened in the official Séances Spéciales selection. According to L'Équipe, the film is directed by David Tryhorn and Ben Nicholas.
Chants of "Éric, Éric, Éric" greeted him as he stepped from a German saloon at the Palais des Festivals, with fans and photographers eager to see the former enfant terrible turned multi-disciplinary artist.
The 59-year-old wore all black with polished shoes and a black felt gypsy hat. His wife, actor Rachida Brakni, 49, in a dove-coloured dress, stayed alongside.
They met during the 2002 shoot for L'Outremangeur. At the top of the steps, festival general delegate Thierry Frémaux welcomed them.
The Tryhorn and Nicholas documentary charts his journey from Auxerre to Manchester United, with the triumphs and transgressions that keep him an icon at Old Trafford and across England.
From Saturday the five-time English champion remains on show at Cannes. He features in Avril Besson’s debut Les Matins merveilleux, as a wine merchant in Séances Spéciales, and in Ali Cherri’s short La Sentinelle in Semaine de la Critique, as a doctor.
Cantona is becoming a Cannes regular, having climbed the steps in 2009 for Ken Loach’s Looking for Éric, when he played a ghostly version of himself alongside a depressed Manchester postman.
