Five memorable Celtic moments, with a nod to the late Celtic Historian and Celtic Star legend David Potter, on this day starting in 1907…

Jimmy “Napoleon” McMenemy scored

ONE – SATURDAY 19 JANUARY 1907 – In splendid weather for the middle of January, Celtic beat Morton 2-1 at Parkhead before a good crowd of 20,000. All the goals are scored in the first half. Morton’s goal comes from a soft penalty, according to The Scottish Referee, but Jimmy McMenemy with a header and then Alec McNair score for Celtic. Celtic remain on top but cannot add to their total. Celtic are now 8 points clear of Dundee at the top of the League with 10 games to go.

TWO – SATURDAY 19 JANUARY 1935 – Pittodrie is fast becoming a bogey ground for Celtic, and today they went down 0-2. This was a shame for a huge Celtic support had made its way up north to see them. But only Jimmy Delaney and Johnny Crum played like the Celts of old. McGrory, just back from injury, was seldom in the picture.

THREE – SATURDAY 19 JANUARY 1957 – Celtic’s poor form of late means that there was a “marked drop” in the Celtic support at Palmerston Park, Dumfries to see what sounds like a great game which ended 4-3 for Queen of the South. In fact it was no such thing. It was 1-1 at half time (both goals being own goals!) but then Queens were 4-1 up before Celtic fought back when it was too late. They scored their last two goals through Higgins and Mochan with the Celtic support already out of the ground heading disconsolately towards their buses or the railway station. Other than the League Cup won in October, it has been a very poor season for Celtic so far.

Vic Davidson on the attack versus St Johnstone

FOUR – SATURDAY 19 JANUARY 1974 – St. Johnstone have caused Celtic more than their fair share of trouble in recent years, so the 3-0 victory at Parkhead is all the more satisfying for Jock Stein’s men. 19,000 see Celtic go ahead with an own goal scored by Jim Argue of the Saints in the first half, but then Stevie Murray scores for Celtic within the last fifteen minutes, followed by the award of a penalty which Bobby Lennox duly converts.

FIVE – TUESDAY 19 JANUARY 2010 – Cappielow Park has seen many great games between Morton and Celtic over the years, but this was not one of them, even though it was a Scottish Cup tie. Celtic are playing in that dreadful yellow and black strip that makes them look like a swarm of wasps, and although they are the better team, they can only score one goal in the 90 minutes and that was from Niall McGinn. However it is a win and Dunfermline Athletic are next up in the Scottish Cup.
