In a breathtaking 2. Bundesliga encounter, a 93rd-minute winner from debutant Piet Scobel sealed a huge three points for Miroslav Klose’s side, who twice fought back from behind to showcase remarkable character and resilience.
The home side made the brighter start, winning a couple of early corners and registering several shots on Nicolas Kristof’s goal as Elversberg took time to settle. Chances continued to arrive for Nürnberg, with Julian Justvan agonisingly striking the crossbar in what was one of several clear opportunities during a dominant first half.
As the old adage goes, missed chances are often punished, and Nürnberg found themselves on the wrong end of it in the 39th minute. Lasse Günther’s low delivery across the box picked out Tom Zimmerschied, who slid home from close range to give Elversberg an undeserved lead heading into the break.
To say the second half burst into life would be an understatement. Justvan drew Nürnberg level just 11 minutes after the restart, breaking through on goal and calmly sliding past Kristof. However, nine minutes later Elversberg were back in front in clinical fashion as Jairzinho Malanga finished coolly after Günther once again supplied a dangerous low cross, allowing the forward time to control and curl beyond Jan Reichert.
Barely five minutes later Nürnberg were level again, this time through debutant Piet Scobel. His first-time effort struck the post, but the striker reacted quickest to his own rebound, nodding past Kristof to make it 2-2. Elversberg were then handed a golden opportunity to win the match eight minutes from time when Berkay Yilmaz conceded a foul, but Otto Stange was denied by a superb low save from Reichert.
The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time. In the 93rd minute, Yilmaz delivered a delightful cross into the penalty area, where Scobel once again rose highest to nod past Kristof, completing a dream debut with his second goal and snatching all three points for Nürnberg.
A dramatic and potentially season-defining victory sees Nürnberg climb to eighth place and gives Klose’s side real momentum heading into the next phase of the campaign. For Elversberg, it marks a disappointing start to the year, with their grip on second place looking increasingly fragile as their rivals prepare to play.
