While KSC’s season appears destined for mid-table mediocrity, Dynamo Dresden still have plenty to play for as they look to secure a vital three points in their bid to climb out of the bottom three.
Karlsruher have struggled for consistency throughout the campaign under Christian Eichner and appear to be on course for another eighth-place finish - the same position they occupied at the end of last season. Despite their patchy form, results have improved in recent weeks, with back-to-back victories providing a welcome boost.
They delivered an impressive performance last time out, coming away from Magdeburg with all three points. Louey Ben Farhat’s brace put KSC firmly in control at 2-0 before the ever-reliable Marvin Wanitzek eased any late nerves, sealing a 3-1 win three minutes from time and ending a run of two straight away defeats.
Karlsruher are currently unbeaten in their last three home matches and will be aiming to extend that run on Sunday as they look to finish the season strongly.
Dresden, meanwhile, have struggled to find the consistency required to pull clear of the relegation battle. After beginning the year with two crucial victories against direct rivals, they have managed just one win from their subsequent five matches, allowing several teams to leapfrog them in the standings. They head into the weekend sitting 15th, level on points with the relegation playoff spot.
However, they produced a huge result last time out. Promotion-chasing Darmstadt arrived in what looked set to be a difficult fixture, but Thomas Stamm’s side delivered one of their standout performances of the season. A first-half double from Vincent Vermeij, followed by Christian Daferner’s strike ten minutes from time, secured an impressive 3-1 victory.
Dresden are unbeaten in their last three away matches, and Stamm appears to have found a tactical formula capable of frustrating opponents - something they will likely attempt to replicate again this weekend.
If the reverse fixture is anything to go by, this encounter could be another entertaining affair. The sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion back in October. Dresden, however, have not won in Karlsruhe since 2017.
Karlsruher SC: Hans Christian Bernat is suspended while Marcel Beifus and Nicolai Rapp remain sidelined.
Dynamo Dresden: Jakob Lemmer is suspended while Lennart Grill is unavailable due to injury.
