Two players that could depart Leicester City this summer following their Premier League relegation
Leicester City are preparing for life back in the Championship after coming 18th in the Premier League last season.
The Foxes earned promotion in 2024 under Enzo Maresca by winning the second division title, but were unable to remain in the top flight beyond one year.
Relegation has led to some uncertainty surrounding players within the first team squad, with Ben Jacobs reporting that Wilfred Ndidi is set to depart amid a £9 million release clause in his contract amid interest from Real Betis.
It’s unlikely the Nigerian will be the only important player to depart the King Power Stadium between now and the end of the transfer window on 1 September.
Marti Cifuentes is poised to succeed Ruud van Nistelrooy following his exit from QPR at the end of last season, and will be tasked with overseeing something of a rebuild in the East Midlands this summer.
Here we look at two other players that could follow the midfielder out the door at Leicester in the coming weeks.…
Bilal El Khannouss joined Leicester last summer after the club gained promotion to the Premier League.
The winger arrived from Belgian side Genk in a deal worth £21 million, as reported by the BBC last year.
He contributed two goals and three assists from 32 appearances in the top flight, and proved an important part of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first team plans.
However, the Dutchman is now gone and will be succeeded by Cifuentes.
But the Spaniard may not get to work with El Khannouss, whose future with the Foxes is uncertain.
It was reported by Sacha Tavolieri in April that the forward was attracting interest, and that a release clause had been inserted into his contract.
This clause should make a deal quite easy for a prospective club to seal, provided they can afford to match the figure.
Cifuentes will surely be hoping that the Moroccan remains with Leicester beyond the summer, but if teams are able to offer him top flight football then he may be tempted to jump ship after just one year with the Foxes.
When Leicester suffered relegation to the Championship in 2023, Victor Kristiansen made the switch to Bologna on loan.
The defender returned to the King Power last summer, and featured 30 times in the Premier League.
However, their 18th place finish could lead to a permanent departure this transfer window.
It was reported by Fabrizio Romano earlier this month that the Dane was attracting interest from Nottingham Forest.
The Reds will be able to offer Kristiansen European football with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side after their seventh place finish in the Premier League last year.
Nottingham Forest are on an upwards trajectory, and will be an enticing prospect for Kristiansen after Leicester’s relegation.
Cifuentes will no doubt like to see the player remain with the club, with the Foxes hoping to fight for promotion back to the Premier League.
Kristiansen does have a contract until the summer of 2028, which will give the Leicestershire outfit leverage in any upcoming transfer talks.
