The Ballon d’Or ceremony introduced the 'Men's Club of the Year' category in 2021, with Chelsea taking home the crown on the first occasion. Manchester City reigned victorious the following year, before the 'Women’s Club of the Year' award was introduced for the very first time in 2023.

None other than Barcelona took home the inaugural accolade, having completed the 'treble' after winning the Liga F, the Spanish Women's Super Cup and the UEFA Women's Champions League in the 2022/23 season.

The category makes a return to the Ballon d’Or ceremony for a second year running, with award holders Barcelona nominated once again.

The Spanish giants built on their treble success from the 2022/23 season by adding the Copa de la Reina to their growing trophy cabinet. The side completed the ‘quadruple’ after successfully defending their titles in Liga F, the Spanish Women's Super Cup, and the UEFA Women’s Champions League during the 2023/24 season.

While Barcelona may seem difficult to defeat, Olympique Lyonnais will be ready to take on the challenge after receiving a well-deserved nomination for the award. Under the leadership of Sonia Bompastor, Lyon made a significant impact in domestic competitions, winning their 17th title in the Division 1 Feminine in 18 seasons. However, they narrowly missed out on European glory in Bilbao, when goals from Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas secured the Champions League title for Barcelona.

Chelsea return to the list of nominees after an inspirational resurrection from Emma Hayes' side saw the Blues claim a fifth consecutive WSL title. The English side made their way to the semi-final stages of the UEFA Women's Champions League, before a 2-1 defeat by the eventual victors in Barcelona drew their European fairytale to a close.

Another Champions League semi-finalist receives a nomination, as Paris Saint-Germain claim their spot on the list of potential recipients for the award. PSG secured silverware after winning the 2023/24 Coupe de France feminine under the management of former head coach Jocelyn Precheur, who is now in charge of the London City Lionesses.

In addition to the established clubs in Europe, NJ/NY Gotham FC of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) are also nominated for the award. In the 2023 season, Gotham FC won their first piece of NWSL silverware since the league was established in 2012, claiming the NWSL Championship. The triumph came after a 2-1 win over OL Reign in the NWSL Playoff Final (now known as Seattle Reign), thanks to goals from Lynn Williams and Esther Gonzalez.
