A lone goal from Mallory Swanson was enough to clinch the 2024 Olympics gold medal for the USA in their tight clash against Brazil. New manager Emma Hayes secured a dream start to her career in the States, pipping the Brazilians to the top prize in Paris.
As Canarinhas earned silver in Marta’s final international tournament — the 38-year-old he will retire as a three-time Olympic medalist.

After a disappointing 2023 World Cup campaign last summer, the USA were hoping to make amends under new head coach Hayes. Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage, finishing third in Group F.
Despite the USA getting the game off to a better start, Brazil enjoyed the majority of the early chances. Ludmilla had an early effort ruled offside in the 16th minute after a tight VAR call. Although both sides had chances throughout the first half, the teams went in goalless at the break.
After a nervy start to the second half, Swanson finally broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. The forward slotted the ball home from the centre of the box to give Hayes’ side the lead. The USA dominated the next period of play, threatening to further their lead. Brazil had several chances late on in the tie with Marta leading the charge for long periods. Despite their efforts, the South Americans were unable to find the crucial goal to restore their gold medal challenge.
Hayes picks up her first major honour with her new side, while the USWNT now boast five gold medals and seven Olympic gongs overall in their history. For Marta, the silver medal marks the end of her international career with Brazil. The 38-year-old has represented Brazil at six Olympic games during an international career spanning more than two decades.
