Senegal is firmly in the race for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. During a press conference, head coach Mame Moussa Cissé was keen not to put too much pressure on his players.
With just days to go before the kick-off of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, Mame Moussa Cissé is keeping it real as he leads the Senegalese squad. "It won't be easy in this group, but our goal is to reach the next round because that's what it means to be consistent—not just consistent in qualifying, but consistent in performance. We're going to give ourselves every chance to make the quarter-finals and even go beyond that," declared Mame Moussa Cissé.
According to the coach, this new campaign is "an opportunity to confirm what we've accomplished, but also a way to continue growing in the competition. The goal is to make sure we're regulars at this level. It's the first time the team is playing in back-to-back AFCONs. That will help us toughen up again in a high-level tournament."
Reflecting on his journey at the helm of the Senegal women's national team, Mame Moussa Cissé highlighted the progress. "In 2019, when I arrived, women's football was barely talked about in Senegal. Today, it's become a reality. The league is gaining momentum, the team is followed, criticized, and eagerly anticipated. That's a good sign—it means we're being taken seriously. A few years ago, publishing a squad list drew no reaction. Now, people debate and expect results. We see this pressure as a sign of maturity. We've grown. People are demanding victories from us, and that's proof that we exist now. In the WAFU tournament, the expectation is the title. At the Women's AFCON, we're set ambitious targets. But we stick to our principles: humility, realism, and consistency. We know our context, our progress, and our direction. Our focus remains on that," added Mame Moussa Cissé.
