K League 1 returns this weekend after the World Cup break, with Round 16 marking the start of the second half of the season. A top-four showdown between Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Gangwon FC headlines the weekend's action, while Gwangju FC look to kickstart their campaign following a busy transfer window. Elsewhere, teenage midfielder Son Jeong-beom continues to emerge as one of the league's brightest young talents as leaders FC Seoul resume their title charge.

After a month-long break, K League 1 returns this weekend, and Round 16 features a heavyweight clash between third-placed Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (26 points) and fourth-placed Gangwon FC (24 points). With just two points separating the sides, the result could see the teams swap places in the table.

Jeonbuk head into the match unbeaten in their last six league games (W4 D2) and had looked increasingly solid. They conceded twice in a 2-2 draw with Pohang Steelers in Round 10 but thereafter allowed just one goal across their last five matches, building their recent success on a strong defensive foundation.

Up front, Tiago Oroba had been in fine form, scoring three goals in his last five appearances and netted a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Gimcheon Sangmu in Round 15 to secure all three points for Jeonbuk. But the Brazilian has been ruled out through injury, prompting the Green Warriors to sign Gytis Paulauskas on loan from Jeju SK.

Gangwon are also enjoying an impressive run, going unbeaten in their last five matches (W3 D2). Like Jeonbuk, they have been built on defensive resilience, conceding just once during that stretch. At the heart of that success has been Lee Gi-hyuk, whose defensive consistency and ability to build play from the back earned him four K League Best XI selections during May. His outstanding performances were also recognised with the league's Player of the Month award, and after recently gaining experience on the World Cup stage, Lee will be looking to help Gangwon continue their momentum.

The first meeting between these sides this season ended in a 1-1 draw. With both teams entering the match in excellent defensive form, clinical finishing in front of goal could prove to be the difference. Their second meeting of the campaign kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Jeonju World Cup Stadium.

Team of the Round

Gwangju Ready for a Second-Half Revival

Bottom side Gwangju FC (7 points) went into the break on the back of a heavy 4-0 defeat to Incheon United in Round 15. Since beating the same opponents in Round 2 back in March, Gwangju have struggled badly, enduring an eight-match losing streak between Rounds 5 and 12 and failing to add another victory.

During the break, however, the club moved quickly to strengthen its squad. Defensively, Gwangju signed Brazilian centre-back João Pedro. While naturally a central defender, he is also capable of playing at full-back, providing valuable versatility as Gwangju prepare for a demanding second half of the season.

In attack, Gwangju have brought in Australian international John Iredale. Iredale made his K League debut with Seoul E-Land last season, scoring 10 goals and providing one assist in 27 appearances to establish himself as one of K League 2's most dangerous forwards. Gwangju have managed just seven goals in 15 league matches this season - the lowest tally in K League 1 - and will hope Iredale can inject fresh life into their attack.

Neither João Pedro nor Aydale will be available this weekend, as both become eligible only after the additional registration window opens on Thursday 9th July. Nevertheless, the signings underline Gwangju's determination to turn their season around.

Gwangju face Ulsan HD in Round 16. Ulsan won the first meeting between the sides 5-1 earlier this season, but all eyes will be on whether Gwangju can show signs of improvement following the break. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at Gwangju World Cup Stadium.

Player of the Round

FC Seoul's Rising Star Son Jeong-beom

League leaders FC Seoul (32 points) extended their winning streak before the break with a 2-1 victory over Daejeon Hana Citizen in Round 15. While Seoul have impressed throughout the season, one of the biggest reasons behind their success has been the emergence of teenage midfielder Son Jeong-beom.

The 2007-born academy graduate progressed through Seoul's U15 and U18 teams before making his professional debut this season. He announced himself by starting the opening-day victory over Incheon United and has quickly become a key figure in midfield thanks to his relentless work rate, accurate key passes, excellent passing accuracy, and willingness to drive forward with the ball.

Son's influence extends to both sides of the game. When midfield partner Lee Seung-mo pushes forward, Son drops deeper to cover defensively, while he is equally capable of making forward runs into attacking areas when space opens up. Acting as the link between defence and attack, the teenager has brought balance and energy to Seoul's midfield and has played a significant role in the club's rise to the top of the table despite being in his debut season.

Seoul take on Incheon United in Round 16 after winning the first meeting between the two sides 2-1 earlier this season. Their second encounter kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at Seoul World Cup Stadium.
