These 21 Sheffield Wednesday players either have their contracts running out or their loan spells expiring at the end of the season

Sheffield Wednesday underwent wholesale changes to their side this summer, rebuilding an almost entirely new squad from the ashes of Dejphon Chansiri's reign.

18 new players were signed by the Hillsborough-based club, with plenty of loanees among them. Additionally, quite a few one-year extensions were handed out, as Henrik Pedersen put together a core group of veterans he could rely on throughout the campaign.

Therefore, while the new higher-ups at Wednesday were busy this summer, next summer presents a whole new task, as only a handful of their current players are actually contracted with the South Yorkshire side for the long term.

These 21 players have contracts that could end at the end of the season, or earlier.

Davis Keillor-Dunn

We'll start with the various loan stars, and of all of them, Wrexham's Davis Keillor-Dunn's deal with Sheffield Wednesday is the shortest.

Indeed, the 28-year-old, who scored 31 times in 66 League One games with Barnsley in 18 months before joining the Championship side, is only on a short-term loan back in South Yorkshire until January 2nd.

Ali Al-Hamadi

One of the later arrivals at Hillsborough this summer was Ali Al-Hamadi, who joined on loan from Ipswich Town for the season.

After a poor spell at Luton Town last year, where injury stopped him from getting a regular run out in the Hatters side, the Iraq international will be hoping for some better luck at his new club.

After a solid first loan spell away from Manchester City in the latter half of last season at Sheffield Wednesday, midfielder Jaden Heskey is back at Hillsborough for the full campaign.

The 20-year-old arrived on deadline day and will be looking to continue his development throughout the League One term.

Liverpool starlet Kieran Morrison is in the infancy of his first loan spell away from the Reds academy, as he also joined Sheffield Wednesday for the season.

The 19-year-old has already begun to show his promise, with an encouraging display against Peterborough United in his first league start last Saturday, capping that off with an assist.

After playing a big part in Bolton Wanderers' promotion to the Championship last season, netting 12 and assisting five, Sheffield Wednesday were pleased to keep him in the third tier after they secured his loan services from Hull City.

The 23-year-old already has a goal and an assist for his new club.

Harry Gray is highly considered as one of the brightest prospects to come out of a Leeds United academy famed for bright prospects.

After an introduction to senior football at a struggling Rotherham United in the latter half of last season, the 17-year-old was sent out to compete at a higher League One-level side in South Yorkshire this season.

Of all the first-teamers whose options in their contract were exercised at the end of last season, Ernie Weaver is definitely the one that Sheffield Wednesday fans want to see tied down long-term.

The 20-year-old was denied the chance to have a proper breakout year last season due to injury, but has already shown his class in League One, coming off the bench and being solid against Peterborough last Saturday.

Jamal Lowe also had the option in his contract exercised in the summer, and has begun this season in red-hot form.

The 32-year-old has already at least equalled, if not bettered, his goalscoring tally in each of his two previous campaigns at Hillsborough through seven games in all competitions this season, showing why he's spent the last seven years at a higher level than League One.

Sheffield Wednesday legend Liam Palmer had his contract extended by a year in the off-season, too. It's been 16 years now since he made his Wednesday debut in the EFL Cup against Bury.

The 34-year-old is currently 36 appearances away from equalling Andrew Wilson atop the all-time Wednesday appearance ladder. If he doesn't surpass that this year, you can bet he'll be kept around to try and break that in the future.

Cole McGhee is another young star who had his option exercised in his contract this past summer, with it expected that he'd be given the season in League One to prove himself.

After a strong pre-season, though, the 20-year-old was forced off with a shoulder injury against Accrington Stanley in the final week before the campaign began, and hasn't featured since.
