Willie Loney scored

ONE – SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1910 – Celtic approach this Scottish Cup tie at Boghead, Dumbarton with a few qualms, for it was not all that long ago that Dumbarton’s ground was called “fatal Boghead”. But Dumbarton have now fallen on bad times and are now in the Second Division. A giant-killing was feared but Celtic won through 2-1 with goals from Willie Loney and Jimmy McMenemy. The crowd was 10,000 with many trains arriving from Glasgow.

Andy McAtee scored twice

TWO – SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1916 – The weather is predictably miserable and the war shows no sign of ending, but for those 10,000 who turn up at Cathkin to see Celtic take on Third Lanark. Celtic give some light relief and entertainment in the shape of a 4-0 defeat of the home side with two goals from Andy McAtee, one from Jimmy McColl and a penalty from Joe Dodds.

Jackie Gallacher scored twice

THREE – SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1949 – The luckless Celtic go out of the Scottish Cup to Second Division Dundee United at the primitive Tannadice Park before a huge crowd of 22,000. Seven goals are scored but Celtic are always chasing the game and it ends up 4-3 for United. For Celtic, Jackie Gallacher scores twice and Charlie Tully once, but it is not enough. United’s star man is goalkeeper Alex Edmiston.

FOUR – SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1966 – An excellent example today of the old adage that League titles are won by grinding out results rather than champagne football, as Celtic labour to a 1-0 win over Motherwell, the goal coming from Joe McBride. Celtic lost last week to Aberdeen and are about to embark to Georgia to play Dinamo Kiev, so a good result was vital.

FIVE – SATURDAY 22 JANUARY 1983 – An excellent 4-1 win over Hibs at Celtic Park today with two goals from Frank McGarvey and one each from Charlie Nicholas and George McCluskey. A disappointing feature is the poor attendance of 17,108. The weather is not great, but one would have expected a little more to see a game between these two.
