Hansi Flick had to kick off his managerial career at FC Barcelona with a severely weakened team, as the Blaugranes made only two additions in the summer transfer window before the start of the season, and several of their important players were also out with injuries.
The backline was one of the areas most severely impacted by injuries, as both Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen were out with long-term injuries. Neither of them has been able to make their return to the pitch yet, but both are quite close to getting back into action.
Fortunately, in their absence, Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi were able to hold the line, and their performances up to now will make it even more difficult for even a defender like Araujo to regain his starting spot.
In such circumstances, it will become even more difficult for a defender like Eric Garcia to get minutes on the pitch, and this is a reason why he has been linked with a move away from Barcelona recently.
The Catalans themselves were open to letting him leave to gain some space in their wage bill and to address the problem of surplus center-backs in their squad.
However, according to Fichajes, the defender is not even contemplating leaving the Blaugrana club, even though he understands that he is not going to be a starter under Flick.
The Spaniard has accepted his secondary role in the squad, despite the presence of interest from some notable European clubs, including Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Real Sociedad.
Garcia might reconsider his position in the summer, but his decision to remain will be a double-edged sword for Barcelona. His departure would have allowed the Catalans to reduce their wage burden, but with him in the squad, Hansi Flick will have a committed and skillful defender for the hectic part of the season.
