Liverpool are preparing for further movement around Giovanni Leoni, with Juventus positioning the young defender as a serious alternative after missing out on other preferred options. According to Standard Sport, the Serie A side have intensified their focus on the Italian centre-back despite Liverpool’s firm reluctance to do business.
Leoni arrived from Parma last summer in a £26m deal, but his start at Anfield was disrupted in the harshest fashion. The defender “has made just one first-team appearance after rupturing his ACL on debut”, a setback that halted his momentum at the very point Liverpool were beginning to assess his place in the squad.
There is encouragement now, however. He is “finally thought to be closing in on a return to play”, and reports suggest he could be available again after the international break. That return appears to have sharpened Juventus’ interest rather than cooled it.
The report states Juventus are “preparing a thorough squad rebuild after a string of subpar finishes in Serie A”. A key element of that strategy is a stronger domestic identity, with the club seeking “a strong Italian core, reminiscent of the glory days driven by the centre-back pairing of Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini.”
Having found Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori and Chelsea’s Marco Palestra beyond reach, Juventus “have now turned to Leoni”, and their persistence is notable. They “have already made multiple approaches to take him on loan” and “have not been deterred by repeated rejections and will continue to send scouts to monitor him every week.”

For Liverpool, this feels straightforward on the surface. Leoni is only a year into a long-term contract and the club are “not keen to let him go so soon”. Given the investment already made, and the fact his injury has delayed rather than diminished his development, there is little incentive to open the door now.
Juventus may keep pushing, but Liverpool hold the stronger hand. If Leoni returns to fitness and begins featuring regularly, his value, and his importance, could rise quickly.
From a Liverpool perspective, this feels like one to shut down quickly and calmly. There is no obvious reason to entertain a loan, and even less reason to weaken depth in a position where development takes time. Leoni has barely had the chance to get started because of injury, so any judgement on his ceiling would be premature.
The most telling part of this report is Juventus’ persistence. Clubs do not keep coming back unless they believe there is real upside there. If they are willing to “continue to send scouts to monitor him every week”, that tells you plenty about the regard in which he is held.
Supporters will probably feel patience is the key here. A £26m signing deserves a proper run at recovery and integration before any decision is considered. Liverpool have already done the hard part by backing him through the ACL setback. Selling, or even loaning him out before he has re-established himself, would feel like giving another club the benefit of that patience.
There is also a wider squad point. Young centre-backs need time, trust and coaching. If Leoni is close to returning, this is the stage where Liverpool should be looking at what they actually have, not helping Juventus with their rebuild. Fans will want to see him stay, get minutes, and show why Liverpool moved for him in the first place.
