There is no denying the fact that this FC Barcelona team is filled to the brim with quality. However, it is also true that there is some concern over the depth of the squad, and that is exactly why injuries are always a major issue to deal with.
For that exact reason, Pedri’s injury in the game against Slavia Prague in the UEFA Champions League ended up becoming a major point of concern. Fortunately for La Blaugrana, another midfield maestro has risen to the occasion in his absence.
As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, Dutch midfielder and club captain Frenkie de Jong is the player who has stepped up in midfield now that Pedri is sidelined. In fact, his recent performance against Albacete in the Copa del Rey only further reiterates that assessment.
In terms of his midfield control and composure, his defensive workrate, and even his offensive contributions, De Jong was everywhere. His passing was excellent, with the Dutchman completing the most passes out of anyone on the pitch (80), and he even consistently won possession of the ball with five recoveries.
Beyond that, he provided the crucial assist that allowed Lamine Yamal to score in the game and break the deadlock against a resilient opposition. Even in terms of his general involvement, he had 92 touches throughout the game, which was the third-highest of any Barça player on the pitch.
Such a strong performance, coupled with other great displays recently, has showcased exactly why Barcelona continues to trust the 28-year-old Dutchman and renewed his contract until 2029. While Pedri’s return would definitely be a major boost, De Jong’s displays in his absence have certainly minimised the damage.
