Clash of the titans

It was an unforgettable Champions League tie between two of the competitions most prestigious clubs.

The tie had everything — stunning goals, VAR controversy, dark arts, heroic defending, you name it. But what else would you expect when a trip to Wembley is on the line for two of the biggest clubs in world football?

Real Madrid proved that, while still have some lessons to learn as they slowly transition away from the great Zidane-led side over to the new era of young superstars, they always find a way. They always find a way.

Meanwhile, Bayern showed that aura can only carry you so far. It is no secret that Thomas Tuchel's men have been lightyears away from their usual standards in domestic play, and eventually their fragilities came back to punish them tonight.

London now beckons, and another European giant will meet Real Madrid in the final, but when it comes to pedigree, the battle will be severely one-sided.

An unlikely hero

In a tie laced with superstars such as Harry Kane, Vini Jr., Luka Modrić and so on, who would have thought that 34-year-old Joselu would be the man to send Real Madrid to the Champions League final.

The former Stoke man has featured for nine different clubs in his professional career, including multiple stints at both Real Madrid and Celta Vigo.

Nonetheless, he was the man in the right spot to fire home both the equaliser and a dramatic stoppage-time winner to spark wild scenes of celebration among the Madrid faithful.

This competition has given us some superb stories over the years, but this one will live long in the memory.

Joselu will serve as the perfect reminder to all football fans across the world — never write a player off.

A fitting end

Though it looked like Bayern were set to pull off a stunning victory in Madrid after Alphonso Davies' stunning go-ahead goal just past the hour mark, it was perhaps the most fitting Champions League ending for Thomas Tuchel as Bayern manager.

The Bavarians have been far off it domestically, crashing out of the Pokal to third-tier FC Saarbrücken while letting their Bundesliga title streak slip into the hands of Bayer Leverkusen.

And with Thomas Tuchel already on his way out the door, Bayern will have to simply move on from this heartbreak and start fresh in the summer.

In another universe, Tuchel could have lead this side to a Champions League victory against Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund as his final moment as Bayern boss — now that would have made for some awkward goodbyes in June.
