These three managers should be on Plymouth's radar if they are to relieve Tom Cleverley of his duties

Plymouth Argyle's long-awaited return to Home Park after six games on the road ended in disappointment, and Tom Cleverley's future in the Pilgrims' dugout is in even further jeopardy.

A win away at Port Vale seemed to have afforded Cleverley some more time, as it helped Argyle climb off the foot of the table, but a 3-0 home loss to Northampton Town has once again placed the former Watford boss in the hot seat.

Plymouth's return to League One has been a nightmare, losing 11 of their 17 games and conceding a league-worst 31 goals. For a former Championship side, it really hasn't been good enough.

Argyle currently find themselves staring down the barrel of relegation to League Two, with little to suggest that fortunes are set for an upturn for as long as the ever-under-fire Cleverley remains in charge, having first been appointed in the summer following his exit fromW Watford.

It's surely only a matter of time before the plug is pulled on Cleverley, and if Plymouth do so over the coming days, here is who they should be targeting.

Alan Sheehan

If Plymouth still believe that they have enough of a pull to bring in managers who have recently departed jobs in the Championship, then Alan Sheehan may be near the top of their shortlist.

This season's not been great for the Swans, who are currently level with the bottom three and in the midst of a five-game losing run, which started with the 39-year-old in charge.

However, Sheehan did depart the Swansea.com Stadium with a 40% win rate over the course of 32 games, which was due mainly to the strong end to last season whilst he was in charge.

Swansea had the fourth-best points return and the second-best goals against numbers in the second tier in the 13 games he took charge of following the dismissal of Luke Williams. Whilst this could be down to a new-manager bounce, perhaps a bounce is what Plymouth need.

If the higher-ups at Home Park are still holding on to a young manager profile capable of overseeing a project, Sheehan could be a good fit if Cleverley were axed.

Steve Evans

Steve Evans is 24 years Sheehan's elder, so he doesn't exactly fall under the same category of young, project managers, but there's no denying the wealth of experience that the 63-year-old would bring to Home Park.

Evans has brought about promotions from the division, as well as helped sides that many expected to be struggling survive comfortably, and despite his last managerial tenure at Rotherham United ending disappointingly, the Millers were never in any relegation danger before his dismissal in March.

Plymouth need someone to come and steer the ship and help the club avoid the drop, and the commanding presence of the experienced boss may be exactly what the Pilgrims need.

There may be some negative connotations surrounding the hire of Evans initially, but if he can get the job done and avoid a second successive relegation, those inside Home Park perhaps wouldn't mind.

Jon Brady

It's coming up to a year now since Jon Brady departed Northampton Town. In the near-four-year spell he had at Sixfields, he helped deliver promotion to League One, and then kept the Cobblers up against the odds with their best finish since the 2007/08 campaign.

Ultimately, it was his decision to resign from his post, and he could be ready to step back into management after taking a year's break.

Brady's helped both Northampton and Brackley Town before that, to improve on the field in multi-year spells, and he's never been sacked. He, like Evans, would provide a commanding voice in the changing room and would help shore up a leaky defence.
