Plymouth Argyle search for Tom Cleverley may be on the horizon if their bad run of form continues

With Plymouth Argyle producing performances and results well below their expectations prior to the season's start, Tom Cleverley is under immense pressure to turn things around.

It's been far from the ideal start for Plymouth Argyle this season after 13 games played, as the Pilgrims sit in 22nd place after being tipped as candidates to make an immediate return to the Championship. However, when it comes to performances on the pitch, despite dropping a division, it hasn't got any better, even with a change of manager in that time.

After high hopes for the ex-Watford boss Tom Cleverley coming in the door in the summer, it's become a common theme week in week out that Pilgrims supporters cannot see a team identity as of yet, and it has been lacking for quite some time.

If events aren't to take a turn for the better in the near future, we could well see the sacking of Cleverley, even though his tenure has been short-lived. With that said, Football League World take a look at three suitable replacements for the 36-year-old in order to get Plymouth out of the current rut.

In terms of current managerial options that you could say are well-established and proven in the EFL, the list is rather brief. But one manager that could take Cleverley's role and hit the ground running is former Argyle caretaker Kevin Nancekivell. With Plymouth stuck in a cycle of terror, reverting to a manager who knows the club inside out could be a great option, and it could be about time to give Nancekivell the job on a permanent basis.

Full-time management would be new to Nancekivell and would unsurprisingly make Pilgrims fans skeptical. However, he has done a decent job in the past for the club.

His style of play is what Plymouth have been crying out for. After taking over from Steven Schumacher, he was known in the little time he had in the dugout to have got his side playing an attractive brand of football, and trained a work ethic into the team to churn out results - exactly what Plymouth need in this current time of turmoil.

Another manager who would be able to slot into Cleverley's current role would be former Luton Town boss Matt Bloomfield. With Bloomfield searching for a quick route back into management, after being dismissed by the Hatters earlier this season, he has been a name who has been linked with a few clubs in recent weeks when a sacking takes place.

Bloomfield would be a suitable candidate for the Plymouth job as he is no stranger to League One and certainly to the top end of the table as shown last season when he led Wycombe to the play-off places.

Bloomfield's style of football has a clear identity which was perhaps absent in his most recent role at Luton, but EFL fans know that he is more than capable of leading Plymouth out of the relegation zone and push high up the table with plenty of football still to be played.

For a team like Plymouth, losing the likes of Nikola Katic and Maksym Talovierov has been a big loss as their physical prowess has diminished ever so slightly. But having a well-drilled group of players that compete for every first and second ball at his disposal, Bloomfield's tactics could well work at Home Park.

1 ? ? Neil Warnock

Perhaps the more far-fetched option of the three, however, ex-Cardiff boss Neil Warnock would be a quality manager to take Cleverley's place in the Home Park dugout due to his proven ability of being in and around English football for decades now.

Having experienced the top levels of English football throughout his long-standing managerial career, Warnock full well knows what it takes to win football matches in high-pressure environments.

His tactical know-how, tough but fair man management and vast experience throughout the leagues could heavily benefit Plymouth.

His appointment would make total sense from a geographical standpoint, as he is currently a football advisor for National League South side Torquay United, but you cannot help but think that if he were to become the next Plymouth manager it would be one for the short-term.

If Cleverley is to depart Home Park, the incoming manager's main aim must be to get results and ultimately get the Pilgrims out of the relegation zone. For all three aforementioned managers, all of them would most likely do just that. So, despite Warnock being a longshot, one thing for certain is that the players would buy into his methods would, in turn, see an improvement in results.
