£34m Arsenal midfielder nearing permanent exit after just five Premier League starts

Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira could finally be heading for a permanent exit from the Emirates, with Hamburg now in advanced talks to sign the Portuguese playmaker.

According to the BBC, the Bundesliga club are discussing a deal worth around €10 million (£8.6 million) for Vieira, with a growing expectation within Arsenal that an agreement will be reached before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

The Gunners are actively looking to move the 26-year-old on, and a return to Hamburg would appear to suit all parties following his successful loan spell in Germany last season.

This is the latest significant development in a transfer that has been building throughout the summer.

Hamburg have made no secret of their desire to bring Vieira back permanently, with the club previously confirming they were doing everything possible to find a solution with Arsenal.

Vieira was also reported to have agreed personal terms with Hamburg earlier this month, leaving the two clubs to find an agreement over the transfer itself.

That now appears to be getting much closer.

The midfielder spent last season on loan with Hamburg, making 29 Bundesliga appearances and scoring seven goals, and clearly made enough of an impression for the German club to push for a permanent deal.

Crucially, Vieira already knows the club, his teammates and the Bundesliga, meaning there should be little difficulty settling back into an environment where he enjoyed considerably more regular football than he managed at Arsenal.

Vieira never established himself at Arsenal

If Vieira does leave for around £8.6 million, Arsenal will be taking a substantial loss on a player they signed from Porto for approximately £34 million in 2022.

There was considerable excitement surrounding his arrival at the time, but Vieira was never able to establish himself as a regular under Mikel Arteta.

He made 47 appearances for Arsenal but started just five Premier League matches during his time in north London.

Vieira subsequently returned to Porto on loan for the 2024/25 season before spending last campaign with Hamburg, and his continued absence from Arteta’s plans has made a permanent departure increasingly inevitable.

At 26, Vieira also needs to be playing regularly rather than spending another season on the fringes of Arsenal’s squad.

The reported fee may look disappointing compared with Arsenal’s original investment, but there is little value in keeping a player who does not appear to have a realistic route back into Arteta’s first team.

With personal terms reportedly already agreed and negotiations between Arsenal and Hamburg now at an advanced stage, Vieira could become the latest departure from the Emirates before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday 1st September.

For Arsenal, it would finally draw a line under a transfer that promised plenty when Vieira arrived from Porto four years ago but ultimately never worked out as hoped.
