A 3D animation appears to challenge FIFA’s position on England’s first goal against Norway in the World Cup quarter-final.

Norway were beaten 2-1 after extra time. They argue Jude Bellingham’s equaliser should not have stood because the ball struck the aerial camera cable in the build-up, which would have required referee M. Turpin to restart with a dropped ball. FIFA said on social media the ball’s chip showed no change, yet The Sun and Aftenposten highlighted a BBC 3D recreation, built on FIFA’s official real-time data using XR Immersiv.io, that appears to show a mid-air deviation where the cable seems to be, and Aftenposten quoted consultant Petter Veland describing the conflicting technology as a mystery and asking who to trust.

The graphic reconstruction indicates the flight of the ball alters at the point aligned with the cable’s path.

Veland said the situation is puzzling, noting one system suggests an incident occurred while another suggests the opposite.

The episode, quickly dubbed cable-gate in Norway, has intensified the debate following their quarter-final exit to England.
