Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia could make his first Premier League start of the season this weekend, with Enzo Maresca’s side hit by a fresh wave of injury woes.
The Blues are gearing up to take on Nottingham Forest at City Ground and will hope to pile the misery on a beleaguered Ange Postecoglou even without Maresca in the dugout.
The Italian will serve a one-match suspension after sprinting down the touchline to celebrate Chelsea’s last-minute winner in the dramatic 2-1 win against Liverpool before the international break.
His celebration earned him a second yellow on the night and will now be forced to watch the Blues from the stands. But before then, he has a selection headache to sort out.
Chelsea are dealing with an injury list that’s growing at an alarming rate.
Maresca confirmed that Cole Palmer will be out for six more weeks despite initial suggestions that he’d be back in early November.
The 45-year-old also ruled out Benoit Badiashile until December, while the likes of Liam Delap, Levi Colwill, and Dario Essugo remain long-term absentees.
As if that’s not enough, Maresca also confirmed that Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Pedro Neto will need to pass a late fitness test, or they could sit out the trip to City Ground.
However, there’s a bit of good news for the Blues. Trevoh Chalobah is available for selection after serving his suspension. He could be partnered by Wesley Fofana at centre-back, ahead of Robert Sanchez.
Malo Gusto will likely start at right-back while Marc Cucurella slots in on the other flank.
Maresca confirmed that Reece James is fit and available, so he could start in midfield alongside the returning Lavia, handing Caicedo a much-needed break.
If Fernandez isn’t fit enough to start, his spot could go to countryman Facundo Buonanotte, while Alejandro Garnacho and Estevao line up on the flanks behind Joao Pedro.
