It might be the often-dreaded international break, but there are some crunch clashes for you to enjoy this weekend. Here are five of the best match-ups.
It’s the first North London derby of the season in the Women’s Super League, as Spurs and Arsenal clash. Spurs have started brightly this season after a dismal 2024/25 campaign, but history is against them in this one. Tottenham have won just two of the previous 19 meetings with their North London neighbours.
Arsenal have struggled for consistency this season, including a Champions League collapse against Bayern Munich in midweek. A derby day win could ignite the fortunes of the European champions.
Seeking your classic club clash fix? Look no further. The Clássico da Saudade is on offer this weekend in one of Brazil’s biggest encounters. Santos are struggling and a run of one win in nine has left one of Brazil’s most famous clubs in danger of relegation. Sitting 17th in the table, points are required urgently to avoid the drop, having been relegated for the first time in their 111-year history in 2023.
Palmeiras, in contrast, top the table. Ahead of Flamengo only on goal difference, the record 12-time champions can not afford a slip.
Scotland head to Greece on Saturday with automatic World Cup qualification still in their grasp. Wins in both of their final fixtures will be enough to secure their place, with the Scots level on points with Denmark, heading into the penultimate round of games.
However, Denmark’s vastly superior goal difference means defeat in Greece could end Scottish hopes, if the Danes are successful against group minnows Belarus. Steve Clarke’s side have their fate in their hands, but a tough task to take on.
There’s another big derby in the WSL as Manchester City and Manchester United meet.
Seven straight wins have propelled City to the top of the WSL table, four points clear of their cross-town rivals heading into this clash. United won this fixture at the Etihad Stadium 4-2 last season, securing a first-ever away win at City in the WSL.
However, the Blues look a different force under the management of Swedish head coach Andree Jeglertz.
The Republic of Ireland are alive and kicking in their World Cup chase, following a stunning 2-0 win over group leaders Portugal. Troy Parrott’s brace has set up a winner-takes-all showdown with Hungary on Sunday.
Hungary have a one-point lead, so the Boys in Green know their task is a simple one. It’s win-or-bust in Budapest for Ireland.
