5 things to watch for in the Championship this weekend

The international break is over and the Championship is back. We’re heading into week 10 with key games across the league this weekend. Leeds United host Sheffield United in tonight’s clash while Luton Town host Watford, leaders Sunderland travel to Hull City and there’s also a bottom of the table clash between QPR and Portsmouth.

A top of the table clash that could go either way

We start at Elland Road for Friday night’s big game as Leeds United take on Sheffield United—a matchup between two of the top promotion contenders this season. Both teams come in with plenty of expectations, and this game feels like it could swing in either direction.

Sheffield United are arguably the form team of the season so far. Undefeated after nine games, they’ve been rock-solid, especially on the road, where they’ve conceded just one goal in four matches, keeping six clean sheets in a row.

However, only two teams in the league have scored more goals than Leeds this season. If any team is likely to break Sheffield United’s resolute defence, Daniel Farke’s side might just be the ones to do it, making this a thrilling encounter.

Derby day drama at Kenilworth Road

This weekend sees a classic derby at Kenilworth Road as Luton Town go head-to-head with Watford. This matchup arrives at a crucial juncture in the season—particularly for Rob Edwards and his Luton side, who are in desperate need of a result.

Many expected Watford to struggle this season, but they’ve exceeded expectations with a solid start. On the other hand, Luton have struggled to find their rhythm and need to turn things around fast. Historically, this fixture has favoured the home team. Luton have come out on top in recent meetings at Kenilworth Road, and they’ll be hoping to build on that this weekend.

While Watford have been impressive overall this season, their away form has been shaky, with three losses from four away matches, conceding an average of 2.5 goals in those games. This could be the perfect opportunity for Luton to bounce back and start gathering much-needed momentum.

Difficult game for Bristol City amid personal tragedy

Middlesbrough host Bristol City this weekend in what will be an emotionally challenging match for the visitors. The tragic news of Bristol City boss Liam Manning’s newborn son’s passing has understandably seen Manning step down temporarily. Our thoughts are with him and his family during this difficult time.

On the pitch, Bristol City face a tough test at the Riverside, where Middlesbrough have been solid this season, with two wins and two draws in their four home games. In light of recent events, it will be a difficult match for Bristol and Middlesbrough may just edge it with a narrow victory.

Burnley’s forward crisis could open the door for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday host Burnley at Hillsborough, and there’s a growing sense of optimism around the Owls. Despite Burnley enjoying a six-game unbeaten streak—the second longest in the Championship—deeper analysis reveals some concerning issues for the Clarets.

Burnley’s lack of offensive firepower has become increasingly evident, with just one goal scored in their last three matches. Adding to their troubles, Lyle Foster will miss this match due to injury, further exacerbating their problems in front of goal.

While Burnley has been a solid team overall this season, their struggles with chance creation could allow Sheffield Wednesday to capitalise. With the home crowd behind them, the Owls have a great opportunity to claim all three points

Does Sunderland really need Jordan Henderson?

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is reportedly being linked with a loan move to Sunderland in January. This rumour has sparked a lot of discussion among fans, especially given Henderson’s recent struggles at Ajax and Al-Ettifaq. His limited playing time and challenges since leaving Liverpool raise questions about whether he still has what it takes to contribute effectively in the Championship.

Sunderland already has a strong midfield lineup, featuring in-form players like Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg. Additionally, they have on-loan Salis Abdul Samed, captain Dan Neil, and the experienced Alan Browne, all contributing to a competitive midfield. Given this depth, many fans question the need for someone like Henderson, especially with a reported wage of £75,000 a week. Some believe Henderson is past his prime and may not provide the same level of performance he once did. However, others argue that his experience and leadership qualities could be invaluable for Sunderland, particularly as they field the youngest squad in the Championship, with an average age of just 23. His presence on and off the pitch could help guide the team to the championship title and ultimately direct promotion to the Premier League.
