5 things we learnt from Brighton 1-0 Bologna

Brighton ended pre-season with a 1-0 win over Bologna at the Amex, completing a 100 percent record but without much strain.

According to WeAreBrighton.com, the programme rarely stretched them, even a 4-3 against Strasbourg played 90 minutes plus an extra 30.

Bologna sat off and produced two shots on target. Brighton had 20 attempts, nine on target, and won it when Jack Hinshelwood deflected in Mats Wieffer’s low drive on 58 after Georginio Rutter’s work down the left.

Hinshelwood also spurned two clear chances, and with Danny Welbeck gone Rutter looks the initial option up front. Charalampos Kostoulas has started on the bench against Roma and Bologna, while Stefanos Tzimas is still returning from an ACL injury sustained in December.

At the back Brighton look settled. Olivier Boscagli and Luka Vuskovic started again, Lewis Dunk and Michael Svoboda arrived on 65. Last season brought the Premier League’s third-best defensive record, only Arsenal and Manchester City conceded fewer. Even after Jan Paul van Hecke’s sale, the back line appears upgraded.

Wide options are thin with Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh out for at least the first month, so full-back Maxim De Cuyper and midfielder Diego Gomez filled in. With natural wingers largely untried at this level, Fabian Hurzeler is funnelling attacks through the middle, and a demanding start now looms, Tromso away in the Conference League play-offs, Aston Villa at home, the return leg, then Chelsea away.
