FC Barcelona are set to return to club football this weekend after the international break as they take on Sevilla in an important game in La Liga. After this weekend’s game, they have a Champions League encounter against Bayern Munich and a league encounter against Real Madrid.

Hansi Flick will know deep down that all the good work he has put in so far as the coach of the Catalan club will result in nothing if they don’t manage to make an account of themselves in arguably two of the biggest games of their season so far.

The good thing for the German coach is that a number of star players are set to return from injury after the international break. Frenkie de Jong recently made a return just before the break and will be working his way back to full fitness, keen to start the game against Bayern Munich.

Recently, we covered a story revealing that Barcelona are not too optimistic about the contract renewal of Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfield star’s contract expires in 2026 and he is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Now, as per Fichajes, Barcelona could actively look to sell Frenkie de Jong in the summer of 2025 if he fails to sign a new contract as the Spanish club wants to avoid the situation of him potentially leaving for free a season later.

Should Barcelona make the 27-year-old available in the transfer market, Manchester United continue to be the strong contender for his signature. The Red Devils have been long-term admirers of Frenkie de Jong and could finally realize their dream of signing him.

On paper, there is no doubt that Frenkie is the kind of profile that would thrive in Hansi Flick’s system. He will definitely get a chance to showcase just what he can add to this team in the coming weeks once he is back at 100%.

Ideally, Barcelona would love for Frenkie to renew his contract and stay at the club. However, right now, there is no clarity on the situation and only time will tell how this particular saga pans out. Let’s wait and see if the club can reach an agreement with the €60m-rated on an extended stay.
