Harry Amass should be on the lookout to leave Manchester United in the next window, as Burnley and West Brom should prepare moves

Whilst in the midst of an international break, clubs across the Championship will be assessing their season and squads so far, as many will already have one eye on the upcoming January window in three months.

The transfer window may be closed, but that doesn't mean clubs across the Championship will have halted their hunt for potential recruits.

Many of the players across all four professional tiers of the English football pyramid who aren't earning enough game time will be on the lookout for new clubs come the winter window, including Manchester United left-back Harry Amass, whose lack of minutes at Old Trafford will be doing no such good to his development.

Out of contract in the summer, United are set to trigger a one-year extension in his current deal, as one would imagine a big decision regarding his future must be made this January.

Why Championship clubs should be interested in signing Harry Amass

Amass, 19, spent the first half of last season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship before joining division rivals Norwich City on loan for the second half of the campaign, though injury would end his stay at Carrow Road prematurely.

The left-back, capable of playing left wing-back, was predominantly utilised as the latter during his six-month stay in South Yorkshire, and despite his previous lack of first-team experience and Wednesday's struggles, thrived.

Reports in the summer stated that Amass was available for as little as £6 million, though no club stepped up to match the Red Devils' valuation. Although the 19-year-old featured in United's 4-0 win over Sabah in the Champions League a few weeks ago, his game time remains in doubt.

Should his situation at Old Trafford remain unchanged by January, a move elsewhere, whether permanently or on loan, must be sanctioned, as Football League World takes a look at two Championship clubs that should be interested in signing the youngster this January.

Burnley were linked with a move for Amass before the summer deadline, with the Clarets reportedly seeing a bid worth around £3.5 million knocked back by the Red Devils for the left-back.

Under Nicky Hayen, Burnley haven't exactly begun the 2026/27 Championship season as they would have hoped, winning none of their opening eight league games, drawing four and losing four.

Certainly, one would expect the Clarets, with the quality of their squad on paper, to find their way out of trouble before too long, and avoid following in the footsteps of the likes of Sunderland, and, more recently, Luton Town and Leicester City to undergo back-to-back relegations from the Premier League and second tier.

If they are able to fire themselves away from danger before too long, then the January window will quickly become an important one for Hayen, who may be looking to return to a deal for Amass.

Each of Bashir Humphreys, Lucas Pires, Connor Roberts, and Oliver Sonne has deputised at left-back already this season, and Amass would not only provide another option in that area, but immediate quality.

Likely still available for cheap or on loan, it would be no surprise to see Burnley revisit this move in the winter.

West Bromwich Albion, unlike Burnley, have had an excellent start to the season, continuing where they left off under James Morrison, winning four, drawing two, and losing two in their first eight Championship games heading into the international break.

The Baggies have recently been struck by the devastating news that Nolan Galves will miss the remainder of the season through injury, despite only signing from Rodez over the summer.

Callum Styles has been operating at right-back over the previous few games to great effect, whilst Conor Townsend has moved in at left-back.

Brayann Pereira can offer cover at right-back, but now, the Baggies are left with just three fit senior full-backs in their squad until at least January, and given Pereira's lack of Championship experience and Townsend's previous injury problems, that area of the pitch could very quickly become a big problem for Morrison.

A full-back, whether that be a loan or permanent, must be on their shopping list heading into January, and Amass could be the perfect fit.

The Baggies brought Toby Collyer to the Black Country from Old Trafford in the summer, and could complete a similar trick with Amass, who would fall in line with their recent transfer strategy of bringing in young and hungry players.

Excellent going forward and in defence, Amass could be West Brom's heir to Styles in the long-term, whilst offering competition for the Hungarian in the short-term, as Morrison should look to get this deal over the line ASAP.
