One of the most beloved and remembered players by the Rojiblanca Nation in recent times is definitely Ramón Ramírez, who today celebrates his 56th birthday. The Nayarit native won the hearts of the Chivahermanos fans for his great qualities on the field, but also for the charisma that has accompanied him throughout his life.
To celebrate another trip around the sun for Guadalajara's historic number 7, here are some of the most important moments in Ramón's life.
Debut in the top flight
After playing a great role with the Coras of his native Tepic, Nayarit in the Second Division, the Estadio Olímpico Universitario witnessed his debut in the First Division wearing the Santos Laguna jersey on September 28, 1990, in a match against the Pumas. That is where his career in the top flight officially began.
Arrival in Guadalajara
The 'Super Chivas' project aimed to have the best Mexican players available, and Ramón Ramírez was a must-have. Ahead of the 1994 Summer season, the Rebaño signed him from Guerrero, thus beginning a love affair with the Guadalajara fans, with episodes such as the historic 5-0 win over América in the 1996 Winter season.
League champion in the 1997 summer season
Ramírez carried the midfield of a talented team that managed to come together to lift the 10th title at the Jalisco Stadium, beating Toros Neza 7-2 on aggregate. In the process, Chivas set the record for most goals scored in a final in the top flight, thanks to a 6-1 victory in the second leg.
World Cup legacy
Ramón's talent led him to represent Mexico in two World Cups: United States 1994 and France 1998. He played in the first as a Lagunero player and the second as a Rojiblanco. In total, he played five matches in the world's top competition.
Tricolor honors
In addition to the World Cups he played in, the Nayarit native played 121 matches with the Mexican national team, with which he won three Gold Cups (1993, 1996, and 1998). He also won the 1999 Confederations Cup at the Azteca Stadium.
Return to Chivas
After leaving the Rebaño Sagrado in 1999, Ramírez returned to his beloved team for the 2002 summer season. His impact was immediate, as he led Chivas to the 2004 Clausura Final.
Pioneer in MLS
As part of the project to identify Californian fans with the nascent Chivas USA franchise in MLS, the board chose him to lead the team, making him the captain and figurehead of the Los Angeles squad in its first season in 2005.
