Performance testing at the weekend, the first team training session on Monday, and now the first test match of the 2025/26 pre-season on Wednesday evening. The Borussia Dortmund first team played away to regional league team Sportfreunde Siegen. For training management reasons, Gregor Kobel, Ramy Bensebaini, Gio Reyna, Serhou Guirassy and Cole Campbell were not playing, so the squad was supplemented with players from the Under-23s and Under-19s.
In front of 18,400 spectators in the Leimbach Stadium, which was sold out for the first time since its renovation in 2005, BVB started the game with lots of possession and had their first chance after eight minutes when Karim Adeyemi’s attempt at a tight angle was blocked by goalkeeper Justin Ospelt. The resulting corner was headed over the crossbar by Julian Brandt. These were the last missed chances for some time: after 15 minutes, the Black&Yellow goals started coming thick and fast. The hosts were unable to clear a corner, Daniel Svensson crossed the ball in, and Elias Benkara - in his debut for the first team - got his head to the ball at the far post, taking BVB into the lead (13). Just three minutes later, Brandt passed from the byline into the centre of the pitch, where Yan Couto scored with a volley from eight metres away that was impossible for Ospelt to save. Most of the game took place in Siegen’s half. One exception was in the 21st minute, when Alex Meyer had to step in to stop a flat shot by Josue Santo.
After a shot by Brandt, strongly assisted by Pascal Groß, was stopped by the keeper (24), the Black&Yellows only had to wait another minute before they could celebrate again: Brandt got the ball through to Marcel Sabitzer, who was able to extend BVB’s lead to 3-0 from the corner of the goal area. In the 28th minute, the fourth goal came. Adeyemi received the ball from Jobe Bellingham and managed to outwit two players at the edge of the penalty area. Adeyemi was also involved in the fifth goal, crossing to Brandt in the centre - all the number 10 needed to do was put out his foot (35). Two minutes later it was Brandt again, heading the ball into the net from a central position to make it 6-0. Shortly before half time, the hosts got through to the Dortmund goal again and Santo managed to score a consolation goal in the first half.
In the second half, coach Nico Kovac completely changed his line-up. The opposition also made changes: Shaibou Oubeyapwa, who came on for Siegen in the second half, took the first shot at the Dortmund goal, now defended by new addition to the team Patrick Drewes (47). In the second half, the Borussians were not as dominant and were not so much of a threat in front of the goal. Instead, it was Siegen who stood out, getting close to the Dortmund goal several times. It wasn’t until the 60th minute that BVB looked dangerous again, but Ayman Azhil’s shot from a central position went over the goal. Six minutes later, after an assist by Sebastien Haller, Maximilian Beier got into the penalty area, outplayed Ospelt, and put the ball in the net to extend BVB’s lead to 7-0. Azhil then capitalised on a mistake by Ospelt, who couldn’t hold onto the ball, to make the score 8-1. In the 85th minute, Siegen had a good chance with a free kick from the left corner of the penalty area, but Drewes was able to stop the ball from going in. Nmecha hit the post in the 88th minute. Shortly after, Julian Ryerson made a save on the line, and Drewes also had to make another parry. However, there were no more goals, meaning BVB returned home with a 8-1 test match win in the bag.
