Rangers fans have spoken in staggering numbers and the latest poll has laid everything bare. The shocking truth is that Rangers boycott support has now reached an unprecedented level among the support. Almost 1500 votes were cast and Rangers boycott support came in at a thumping 95% with just 5% against. For many this is the final straw and Rangers boycott support has become the line that fans are ready to cross.
In the past supporters threatened walkouts or boycotts but rarely followed through. This time feels very different. Ibrox Noise reported previously on similar moves but this new poll shows the anger has reached an historic level. It was not a slim majority or a marginal call. It was near total rejection of the board and of Russell Martin’s leadership. Supporters are no longer content with banners or chants. They are now targeting the very lifeblood of the club which is revenue.
The board cannot ignore this kind of figure. Ibrox Noise highlighted in February that unity could still exist among fans, yet today the story is different. A 95% verdict across almost 1500 fans is not an online gimmick. It is an angry roar of intent. Rangers supporters are known for loyalty and passion but they are also not fools. They see the collapse on the pitch. A manager unable to inspire or control. They also see a board digging its heels in. This poll is a warning siren that loyalty is snapping. If the board do not act the stadium will look emptier by the week.
While the board deserve fury Russell Martin has become the lightning rod. His football has failed in every area. His excuses have drained patience. Fans have lost belief in him and this poll only proves the collapse in trust. A manager without the backing of the stands is doomed. Yet the board keeps backing him. This contradiction is tearing the club apart. The boycott threat is the next escalation and it will hurt everyone involved, a point underlined when The Guardian covered the Sports Direct row.
The figures cannot be shrugged off. A 95% majority in any context is absolute. When applied to the most loyal fans in the world it becomes devastating. Rangers are heading for a clash between boardroom arrogance and supporter resolve. Empty seats will shame everyone. The truth is fans are ready to follow through this time. They are no longer bluffing and they have shown their intent. Unless something changes fast Ibrox will pay the price in silence, and history tells us that The Guardian’s coverage of fan disputes is rarely ignored.
Supporters have had enough of broken promises. They are desperate for change and are willing to send that message through absence. The club faces a perilous period and must heed the alarm. Failure to listen will push fans further away. The writing is on the wall, as it was in The Guardian’s latest Premiership report, where discontent echoed across Scottish football.
