So, did Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti’s goal mean he’s now worth £10 million? Of course not. Naturally he took part in the media duties after the match, and the club was only too happy to highlight his admittedly sizzling goal. But there has not been a single indication, aside from that one strike, that Youssef Chermiti is anything other than a complete waste of money.
Even a swallow can make a summer, as they say. Or perhaps we’ve paraphrased wrong. Or a clock is right twice a day. But the reality is, for £10 million pounds, we expect more than just one great goal. There have been many players who have scored individual great goals, but struggled otherwise. Chermiti may well not be one of them, and may thrive from here.
It would be good if, remarkably, Kevin Thelwell’s waste of money turned out not to be one. Thelwell insisted on signing this kid, and he has been dire so far. Consequently, the conspiracy theories have arisen about the motivation behind the signing. But he will feel smug as hell if his lad finally starts scoring goals.
It would, of course, be to Rangers’ benefit if Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti does, and surprises everybody by going on a run and scoring, looking a £10 million pound player. That would take a heck of a lot in all fairness at this point. But hey, crazier things have happened to Rangers FC in the last 10 years than an unexpected player doing a heck of a lot better than expected. Time will tell if he can turn this round and actually turn into a half-decent striker.
