The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) is seriously considering increasing the number of participants in the 2030 World Cup to 64.

This idea is being taken very seriously by Gianni Infantino, the head of world football’s governing body, who never tires of changing the formats of various continental competitions.

According to the latest reports, the Italo-Swiss chief plans to stage three matches in South America to celebrate the tournament’s centenary, while the rest of the competition will proceed as planned in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.

Africa stands to gain big

If this proposal goes through, Africa will benefit from additional slots for the World Cup finals.

We could soon see at least 13 African representatives at this global football festival—four more than at the next World Cup, which will take place in 2026 in North America with 48 participating nations.
