A Clear Stance: Bayern Boss Dreesen Takes a Stand Against the Association | OneFootball

Jan-Christian Dreesen has taken a clear stance in the debate over the future of the Regionalliga. In doing so, the Bayern boss is contradicting his own state association.

Jan-Christian Dreesen has taken a clear stance in the discussion about reforming the Regionalliga. The CEO of FC Bayern supports the so-called “Compass Model” proposed by DFB President Bernd Neuendorf—and is thus opposing the position of the Bavarian Soccer Association (BFV).

Neuendorf’s model calls for reducing the current five Regionalligas to four divisions starting with the 2028–29 season. This would allow all four champions to be promoted directly to the 3. Liga in the future. Currently, there are five Regionalliga champions, but only four promotion spots.

Dreesen believes this approach is the right one. He told Sport BILD: “First of all, the ‘Compass Model’ seems to me to be the best compromise. From a sporting perspective, the key thing is that every champion finally gets promoted directly.”

Dreesen disagrees with the Bavarian Soccer Association

This position is particularly controversial in light of the BFV’s stance. The association, under President Christoph Kern, had spoken out against the Kompass model in June. Dreesen, on the other hand, stands behind Neuendorf. According to *Sport BILD*, the Bundesliga Executive Committee led by Hans-Joachim Watzke—of which the Bayern boss is a member—also unanimously supports the model.

Dreesen is also pushing for a quick decision: “And I completely agree with Bernd Neuendorf: When it comes to reforms, soccer must not become a symbol of stagnation. That’s why we shouldn’t spend any more time discussing ever-new models, but rather reach a viable consensus as quickly as possible in the best interest of soccer. I hope that the necessary majority will be achieved at a DFB Bundestag convened for this purpose.”

A two-thirds majority would be required to make such a change to the DFB’s bylaws. According to Sport BILD, an extraordinary DFB Bundestag is scheduled for December 18. One alternative under consideration is expanding the 3. Liga to 22 clubs with five relegations—while the five regional leagues could remain in place.
