An insight into the plans of Atlético Madrid coach Fernando Torres for a change of scenery next season has on Friday been provided.
The info comes courtesy of Relevo, and points towards Torres as having set his sights firmly on a new adventure.
The former Spanish international is the current head coach of Atlético Juvenil A, the U19 representatives on the red half of the Madrid divide.
Having been in the position since all the way back in 2021, though, Torres is of the opinion that the time has come for a step up.
Should Atlético hope to keep the 40-year-old on their books, only two real options exist when it comes to as much – taking over the club’s reserve team, or a jump all the way to the first-team.
Whilst the latter, for obvious reasons, is not a viable option at present, Relevo note that ‘at Atlético de Madrid they believe that the figure of Fernando Torres combines more qualities to be a possible future replacement for Diego Simeone than Luis García Tevenet’.
Tevenet, for his part, is the current manager of the Rojiblancos’ reserves.
And though the Spaniard’s work with Atlético B is highly appreciated by those behind the scenes at the Wanda Metropolitano, he is at present not considered a potential successor to Cholo Simeone.
For this reason, Tevenet could be moved into an assistant role in the senior setup in Madrid, opening the door for Torres to take up the reins at Atlético B.
Though no definitive decisions have been made as of yet, one thing is for certain – Torres is ready for a change, and if as much is not on the cards in Spain’s capital, he will seek out opportunities elsewhere this summer.
