Stephen Mfuni left Manchester City to spend the second half of this season out on loan at Watford. Mfuni has quickly seized the opportunity to make an impact in the Championship. The young centre-back had made six appearances for Watford, catching the eye with his ability in possession as well as his defensive acumen and ability to play in multiple positions. Stephen Mfuni has long been highly regarded at Manchester City. In a new interview, Mfuni has stated his clear ambition to make the grade at City. Based on his obvious talent and ambition, there is no reason to believe that one day Mfuni won’t become a key player in Manchester City’s defence.

Speaking in an interview with the Watford Observer, Stephen Mfuni expressed his goal to help Watford chase promotion this season. Outside of that Mfuni explained his playing style and his clear goal of making the grade at Manchester City. Speaking on his style of play, Mfuni said: “The technical side is a unique part of my playing style. I think that’s what separates me from the rest and I’m thankful to god for giving me that talent. I’m just hoping I’ll become a better player in general here, I want to improve everything I’m good at and everything I’m not good at. Hopefully it will all improve.

Tellingly, Mfuni revealed his clear goal of making it at Manchester City. He added: “That’s everyone’s goal, to break into the first team and play at the highest level, to win the best awards. I have players like Ruben Dias, who is a very good person. Nathan Ake.”

All of the first team there are nice. Sometimes when we’re training there the first team will call us over to train with them and it’s a really good environment.

They’re so warm and welcome and it feels like you’re part of the team when you go over there. They help me with tips and have lots of experience.

Mfuni has the talent and drive to make it at City.

Everything about Stephen Mfuni as a young defender is impressive. His ability in possession for an 18-year-old defender is superb. There is also a maturity to his defensive play that belies his young age. Plus his ability to play at centre-back or left-back is a huge feather in his cap. Playing at Watford for the second half of this season should only accelerate his development. That is the major positive of Mfuni spending time playing in the Championship, which is a cut-throat league filled with seasoned professionals.

Outside of his clear talent, Mfuni clearly has the ambition and drive to make it at Manchester City. That cannot be underestimated. It takes more than just talent to make the grade as a City first team player. Especially as a young defender. Mfuni has the necessary temperament to one day make the step up at City. It may not be an immediate jump made by Mfuni. Perhaps a loan spell to a Premier League club may be the next step in Mfuni’s career. Given how well he’s taken to life in the Championship it is clear that he is determined to achieve his goal of making it at City.

Stephen Mfuni has stated his goal of making the Manchester City first team. He has the talent and temperament to achieve his goal. Mfuni has time on his side to make the grade at City. How he grows as a player will be fascinating to watch unfold but it is becoming apparent that he has the technical ability and mental fortitude to achieve his goal.
