A great honor for a Bayern youngster: Karl nominated for “Talent of the Year” | OneFootball

Lennart Karl continues to turn heads. The Bayern gem has been nominated for the “Men’s Young Talent” award at this year’s Ballon d’Or. This marks yet another major accolade for the 18-year-old following his strong debut season with the Munich club.

The Ballon d’Or organizers consider Karl one of the top young talents of the past year. The 18-year-old is among the ten nominees for the Young Talent of the Year award.

Karl finally made the leap to the first team during the 2025–26 season. After several appearances as a substitute, the youngster gradually earned a starting spot under Vincent Kompany. He scored his first goal, of all places, in the Champions League against Club Brugge. This made Karl the youngest goalscorer in FC Bayern’s history in the competition.

It became clear early on that Karl was poised for something special. At just ten years old, the Frammersbach native caught the eye at a scouting tournament. Real Madrid subsequently invited him and his family to Spain for a tryout.

Later, several top clubs vied for his services, but Karl chose Bayern. His stats in the youth ranks were also impressive: for Bayern and Germany’s U19 team, he scored 34 goals and set up 11 more in 31 appearances.

National team coach Julian Nagelsmann also had Karl on his radar for the 2026 World Cup. However, an injury prevented him from being called up to the final roster. So far, the youngster has made three appearances for the German national team—all in friendly matches.

Comparison with Messi

Because of his playing style and his short stature, Karl is repeatedly compared to Lionel Messi. The Bayern youngster himself handles these comparisons with surprising confidence, yet remains humble.

“He’s been my role model ever since I could play soccer—left-footed, small, a player who does incredible things with the ball. Having him by my side gives me something to think about. It’s simply an incentive to work hard to make a name for myself at the highest level,” Karl explained.

In addition to Karl, nine other players have been nominated for the award. Among them are several well-known names from the Bundesliga: Kerim Alajbegović, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Pau Cubarsí, Yan Diomandé, Éli Junior Kroupi, Lamine Yamal, Johan Manzambi, Ibrahim Maza, and Warren Zaïre-Emery.

Whether Karl can ultimately prevail against the international competition will be decided at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on October 26. One thing is already clear: The Bayern youngster has firmly established himself in the spotlight on Europe’s biggest soccer stage.
