Borussia Dortmund are ready to open talks to extend Carney Chukwuemeka’s stay at the Signal Iduna Park beyond the current season, but that may prove more difficult than initially thought.

Sport Bild report that Dortmund can sign Chukwuemeka for an agreed €35m purchase option, but that expires prior to the Club World Cup in June. To sign the Englishman on a permanent basis, club bosses wanted to use the money from the upcoming tournament to fund a move but will now have to find another way to raise the transfer fee.

Per the report, BVB could earn up to €100m in prize money for the Club World Cup, and so a transfer wouldn’t have been a problem. But now there’s a possibility that die Schwarzgelben would have to forego a transfer. Sport Bild further add that it’s unlikely that Chelsea would lower their price for the 21-year-old midfielder.

One option would be to find an agreement to sign Chukwuemeka to a new loan deal.

Speaking last week, Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac discussed Chukwuemeka’s future: “Carney will return to Chelsea first. What happens after that is still up in the air. It’s clear that he has qualities and that I like him, that we all like him. But Chelsea are smart enough to structure the process in such a way that they will benefit from it.”
