Marc Guehi has quickly adapted to life at Manchester City since signing for the club from Crystal Palace during the January transfer window. Guehi has only made three appearances for City since arriving at the club. The England international has quickly settled into his role in Pep Guardiola’s side. Given Guehi’s pedigree as a centre-back, a person, and a leader, there was little doubt that he would make an immediate impact at City. He has done exactly that. Marc Guehi’s performance as Manchester City beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield was superb, and listening to Guehi speak after the game, he has quickly adapted to life as a player in Pep Guardiola’s system.

Marc Guehi was superb as Manchester City beat Liverpool and his comments after City’s win speak volumes.

Throughout the full 90 minutes as Manchester City beat Liverpool at Anfield, Marc Guehi, alongside Abdukodir Khusanov and Ruben Dias, put in a superb performance at centre-back. Guehi read the game exceptionally well. He also snuffed out danger exceptionally well when Liverpool pressed in the second half. Guehi isn’t the most physically imposing defender, but he knows how to use his body with his positioning supremely well. This stood out throughout yesterday’s match. Outside of the moment where Guehi picked up a yellow card for pulling back Mo Salah, Guehi almost put in a flawless performance at the back. Guehi’s performance was exceptional in a game City had to win, at a venue they typically don’t play well at.

What stood out to me after the game, was Marc Guehi’s comments about what it took from his team to beat Liverpool at Anfield. Guehi said that each Manchester City player had to sacrifice for the team to prosper against Arne Slot’s side. In quotes relayed by CityXtra, Guehi explained: “When you’re trying to win games, especially against tough opposition like Liverpool, that’s the standard. It has to be every single person giving every single bit of energy and effort for their brother next to them, and everyone did that today.

Team spirit is a key element of Pep Guardiola’s side and Marc Guehi has quickly adjusted to this aspect of City’s play.

As Manchester City has embarked on their rebuild, Pep Guardiola has spoken of the importance of team spirit throughout this season. It is a vital ingredient of what typically makes Pep Guardiola’s sides so great. Team spirit underpins everything that City do. The free-flowing and dominant football that is associated with Pep Guardiola teams comes from strong team spirit. Listening to Marc Guehi speak and watching him play, he has fully embraced this side of this Manchester City team. Guehi is often seen celebrating a great defensive effort from his teammates or an inspired save by Gianluigi Donnarumma. These moments might seem small, but they all form an important part of the team spirit that Pep Guardiola is building with his new-look team.

Marc Guehi looks right at home at Manchester City. The England international has slotted seamlessly into City’s defence. He has also fully embraced the team spirit that City is building. That seems like an underrated aspect of this City team, but it is a vital component of what Pep Guardiola is putting together. It also played a key role in Manchester City’s come-from-behind win over Liverpool.
