Harry Maguire says it is a “special” moment to beat Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in the Premier League since 2016.
Maguire headed home late on to snatch a 2-1 win for United, after Cody Gakpo had equalised following Bryan Mbeumo’s early opener.
“It means everything,” Maguire told Sky Sports after the game. “They have had the better of us over the last few years and it’s not been good enough for our club.
“We have not given our fans anywhere near enough days like today, so it has been a long time coming, coming to this ground and picking up three points.
“It means a lot more than just three points to the boys and to the club and to the fans.
“I have been here for seven years now and to come to this ground every time and not get three points has been tough.
“It’s for the fans and I hope they have a great night tonight. Of course it is only three points on the table but to come here and do it over Liverpool, they’ve been a top team over the years.
“They’ve been a lot better than us in recent years so it’s nice to get one over on them.
“Football is all about memories and making special memories. I am sure all the fans will go home with memories, we will all go home happy.”
