EFL pundit Carlton Palmer has warned that Sheffield Wednesday will need to focus on staying in the Championship before they can think about restarting their pursuit of Duncan McGuire, whose Blackburn Rovers move is off after a deadline day mishap.
Wednesday and Blackburn both attempted to sign striker Duncan McGuire in the January transfer window, from Orlando City. Rovers looked set to make the deal, but a massive error led to the deal falling through, and now they're both reportedly going to go back in for him.
The Lancashire side looked to have the deal all wrapped up. McGuire had travelled to England to meet with both clubs, but, after Wednesday dithered on the move, according to journalist Alan Nixon, via his Pateron, the American decided that Blackburn would be where he was heading.
The deal looked to be all wrapped, but, instead of submitting the paperwork to the EFL to register the 23-year-old as a Rover, they saved the documents, meaning the deal didn't go through on time.
It will likely go down as one of the biggest mishaps in recent transfer window history, and it led to the club's owners having a meeting with the front office staff which could end up with the club's secretary, Ian Silvester, leaving Ewood Park, as per Nixon.
, if they can stay in the Championship, but football pundit Carlton Palmer isn't wholly convinced that he would be a star from the off.
Speaking to Football League World, the former England international said that it would remain to be seen whether the Owls getting the Rovers target would be a good signing and warned them that they need to focus on staying in the second tier.
"Wednesday have a lot of work to do, at present to preserve their Championship status for next season.
"Before the transfer window closed, they were in for the Orlando striker, who was due to have signed for Blackburn. The only reason he did not sign for Rovers was because of a clerical error at Blackburn's end.
"Blackburn have been doing well, they've been in the top half of the table so only time will tell whether this would end up being a good signing, but, first of all, Wednesday have to stay in the Championship, and they've got a lot of work to do between now and then to decide whether they want to sign the likes of McGuire and whether they can take him forward."
The appointment of Danny Röhl as manager was a slightly different approach anyway. The club had built up a reputation for paying high wages to big names at their level. Röhl was a left-field choice in comparison to this, and bringing in McGuire would be a continuation of this tactic.
Bringing in a 23-year-old American striker from the MLS isn't the traditional way of recruiting for Wednesday, but there is obvious talent there when you look at how he has performed in the league.
Overperforming xG a bit can be a slight red herring; it suggests a bit of luck. But overperforming it to that level suggests that he's a very good finisher, and they are priceless in today's game.
If he's a player that Rohl wants and Wednesday stay up, then you have to think it would make sense for them to look to get a deal done.
