Manchester City signed Gerónimo Rulli from Marseille this summer to be Gianluigi Donnarumma’s backup. James Trafford departed City for Leeds United, which meant that City were in the market for another keeper. They decided to sign the experienced Argentinian keeper to fill an obvious hole in their squad. Enzo Maresca’s side face Norwich City tomorrow night in the third round of the Carabao Cup at the Etihad Stadium. It is expected that Gerónimo Rulli will finally make his City debut in goal in a moment that has been years in the making.

Gerónimo Rulli returned to Manchester City this summer after having briefly been on City’s books previously. Rulli was a City player during the 2016-17 season where he wss loaned out to Real Sociedad. He was eventually sold to the La Liga side without making a senior appearance for City. Given that City typically play their backup goalkeeper in the cup competitions it would seem that Rulli is in line to finally make his Manchester City debut against Norwich City. If that were to occur to would be a special moment for the Argentinian keeper.

Speaking with mancity.com, Gerónimo Rulli has revealed that by rejoining Manchester City this summer, he has fulfilled a significant career goal. Rulli said that wearing the City badge will be special moment for him. He explained: “I feel as though the circle has closed. I’m so happy to have achieved what I always wanted: to play for this club. Even before wearing the shirt, I felt part of me belonged at Manchester City. Wearing these colours and badge gives me a joy and emotion I hadn’t felt in my career.”

It has been some journey for Gerónimo Rulli to finally be a permanent member of the City squad.

With the path that Gerónimo Rulli has taken throughout his career, he probably felt like he would never get the chance to play for Manchester City. The Argentinian keeper has played all over Europe since City sold him to Real Sociedad almost a decade ago. A return to City never really seemed likely for him. However, fate would have other ideas.

Manchester City needed an experienced goalkeeper to be Gianluigi Donnarumma’s backup this season following James Trafford’s departure. An opportunity for Rulli to come ‘home’ arose this summer. It was an opportunity that Rulli couldn’t resist. City quickly wrapped up his signing from Marseille and now the experienced goalkeeper is a full-time member of Enzo Maresca’s squad.
