Divine Mukasa left Manchester City on the closing day of the January transfer window to spend the second half of this season on loan at Leicester City. Playing in the Championship for a team that is fighting to avoid relegation is an important step in Mukasa’s development. Mukasa made his first start for the Foxes last night in their 4-3 defeat to Southampton at the King Power Stadium. Although the Foxes lost, Mukasa showed exactly why he is so highly regarded at Manchester City as he put in an impressive display before he was substituted. Mukasa left the pitch before his team collapsed to a damaging defeat but he showed more than enough while he was on the pitch.
In his first start for Leicester City, it didn’t take Divine Mukasa long to make an impact. He opened the scoring for the Foxes in the 9th minute. Patson Daka teed up Mukasa on the edge of the Southampton area and Mukasa opened the scoring with a quality goal.
From that point, Divine Mukasa’s confidence grew. He was a key part of Leicester’s attacking play while he was on the pitch. Mukasa also grabbed an assist and created three chances for his team while he was on the pitch. The young attacking midfielder’s long passing was a standout feature of his game. This attribute of Mukasa’s helped his team take a 3-nil lead while he was on the pitch. Mukasa also held his own physically against Southampton. In terms of everything you want to see from Divine Mukasa on loan at Leicester, he showed nearly all of it in a very good display.
Unfortunately for Divine Mukasa and Leicester City, the Foxes blew a 3-nil lead to inexplicably lose 4-3 to Southampton. Four second half goals, including 3 in the final 14 minutes, condemned Leicester to defeat. It was a poor result for Leicester who are in a fight for their lives to avoid relegation in the Championship. Mukasa played 64 minutes in Leicester’s defeat and he showed more than enough to suggest that he will greatly aid Leicester’s cause.
All Divine Mukasa can do at Leicester City is put in performances like he did last night. He did all he could for Leicester City and he was substituted with his team in a strong position. Mukasa grabbed a goal, set up another, and his first start in the Championship showed exactly why he is so highly regarded at Manchester City. Mukasa’s loan spell at Leicester is a learning experience for him. He would have learned plenty last night, so that is a good first step for him in the Championship.
If Divine Mukasa can carry on from his impressive display last night over the remainder of this season, he should return to Manchester City as a more mature player. There is no monetary value that can be placed on the experience that Mukasa will gain by spending six months at Leicester City. If all goes well, and last night is a sign of things to come from Mukasa at Leicester, he should return to City ready to make an impact after developing his game in one of the toughest leagues in Europe.
