A new target at right-back has reportedly emerged for Manchester City

Right-back did seem to be a position of concern for Manchester City entering this season. After a busy summer transfer window, Matheus Nunes, Rico Lewis and possibly John Stones looked to be City’s options at right-back. Right-back seemed to be a position that City could look to strengthen in January or next summer. So far this season, Matheus Nunes has stepped up to become a reliable component of Pep Guardiola’s side at right-back. Abdukodir Khusanov has also played at right-back this season, and looked very promising in the role before injury struck.

There now doesn’t seem to be a need for City to sign a right-back during the January transfer window. But next summer, the expectation would be that City will look to strengthen the position. A new report from TBR Football indicates that Sporting CP right-back Ivan Fresneda is a player City currently has its eyes on. Given Fresneda’s age, talent and obvious potential, he could be a player Manchester City moves for next summer to add competition and quality to the right-back spot.

Manchester City are keeping a close eye on Ivan Fresneda as a potential signing for the right-back position.

Jamie Brown has reported for TBR Football that Manchester City have identified promising Sporting CP right-back Ivan Fresneda as a potential transfer target for the right-back position. Furthermore, Brown reports that Newcastle United’s versatile full-back Tino Livramento was City’s first-choice to slot in at right-back. But any potential City move to sign Livramento is complicated, as per the TBR Football report.

Jamie Brown further reports that Ivan Fresneda’s impressive form for Sporting CP has caught City’s eye. Furthermore, Brown reports that Manchester City are monitoring the young Spanish right-back heading into the new year. Lastly, Brown reports that Ivan Fresneda has a £70 million release clause in his current contract with Sporting CP. So if City did decide to move for the talented young right-back in the future, he wouldn’t come cheap.

Ivan Fresneda is a player who would fit into Manchester City’s squad due to his age, talent and potential.

A brief look at Ivan Fresneda as a player reveals that he fits the profile of a player whom Manchester City typically target. Fresneda is only 21 years of age and has his best years ahead of him as a player. Like all Spanish players, Fresneda is gifted technically and has outstanding passing ability. That is typical of all Spanish players.

Ivan Fresneda is a right-back who can get forward as an overlapping full-back. His delivery via a pass or cross is very good for a full-back. The Sporting CP right-back can also invert into midfield from right-back so he is a smart player which would suit the needs fo Manchester City at right-back when they are in possession.

Defensively, Ivan Fresneda reads and anticipates the game exceptionally well. He isn’t blessed with exceptional pace, but Fresneda is quick enough to deal with pacey wingers that ply their trade in the Premier League. The fact that Ivan Fresneda reads the game so well makes up for his lack of exceptional pace. Fresneda also times his challenges well and he is more than strong enough to compete in the Premier League if he did eventually make the move to England.

Summary.

Sporting CP right-back Ivan Fresneda is the latest right-back to be named as a potential Manchester City transfer target. Given the way Matheus Nunes has performed this season and the emergence of Abdukodir Khusanov as a potential option at right-back, a City move for a player of Ivan Fresneda’s profile does makes sense. If they did decide that Ivan Fresneda was the player that they wanted to slot in at right-back they’d be buying a player who could begin life as a squad player before blossoming into Manchester City’s first-choice right-back.
