A piece of advice from Thierry Henry is paying dividends for Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland scored a hat trick last night for Norway in their 5-nil win over Israel in their World Cup qualifying fixture overnight. Manchester City’s number-nine missed a penalty, saw his retaken penalty saved, and then he proceeded to score a hat trick in his country’s dominant win. As Erling Haaland scored his first goal, and Norway’s second goal last night, a piece of advice from Arsenal legend Thierry Henry did come flooding back.

After Manchester City claimed the treble with a 1-nil over Inter Milan in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final, Haaland asked Henry’s advice about further improving as a player. Henry advised Haaland to use his right foot more often, and now Haaland is doing that to devastating effect. Haaland’s first goal for Norway in their win over Israel showed he has taken the advice of Thierry Henry on board as he continues to develop his game.

A piece of advice from Thierry Henry is helping Erling Haaland grow even more as a striker.

After Manchester City claimed their first UEFA Champions League title by beating Inter Milan in Istanbul, Erling Haaland spoke with CBS Sports. The Norwegian international asked Thierry Henry how he could improve as a player and a goalscorer. Henry advised Haaland to use his right foot in certain situations instead of his favoured left foot. Henry explained to Haaland: “If Haaland starts to go on his right foot and finishing with his right across the same run he makes on the left, it’s over. He’ll score 100 goals per week.

I said it on air. I think in the box, there is nothing you can learn. What you do is second to none. But, back to the goal, going onto your right sometimes, making the runs where you don’t want to go. There are some things you can learn, but then they will go to the quadruple!

Thierry Henry’s advice is coming to life for Erling Haaland.

As Erling Haaland scored his first goal for Norway in their 5-nil win over Israel last night, you could see Thierry Henry’s advice to Halaand come to life. Israeli defender Or Blorian made sure to defend Erling Haaland’s left side. He closed the space down to prevent Haaland from shooting with his left foot. Instead, Haaland kept the ball on his right side, moved the ball to his right, and beat Israeli goalkeeper Daniel Peretz with a calm and composed right-footed finish. In that passage of play, Thierry Henry’s advice came to life for the world’s best striker.

Erling Haaland scored against Arsenal in Manchester City’s 1-all draw with Mikel Arteta’s side at the Emirates Stadium in September. It wasn’t the same type of goal that was scored against Israel last night, but it showed that Haaland is beginning to become a lethal finisher on both feet.

Thierry Henry advised Erling Haaland at the end of the 22/23 season to start using his right foot in certain situations. It has taken time, but it seems as if Erling Haaland has taken that advice. It is expected that the vast majority of Erling Haaland’s goals will come on his left foot, or with his head. But if he continues to show that he can finish on his right foot it will make him an even more formidable presence for Manchester City’s, and Norway’s, opponents to contend with.
