Paris Saint-Germain will be hoping to knock Olympique de Marseille off their perch as the only French club to have won the UEFA Champions League this Saturday. All eyes will be on Munich, but the French authorities will be bracing themselves for a busy evening, not only in the French capital – but also in Marseille. Marseille’s police authorities have told RMC Sport that they have already begun coordinating a public security plan tailored to Saturday night’s outcome in Munich, with fears that PSG’s result – win or lose – could spark unrest in the city centre.“A PSG win could make some people lose their heads,” one local police source told RMC Sport. “If you add in opportunistic delinquency, you get the recipe for a high-risk evening.” The same source noted that celebrations could also break out — if Inter win. In that scenario, local fans may take to the streets in relief rather than rage.Marseille fans on the ground have been hoping that Inter Milan can preserve their unique status as the only winners of Europe’s premier competition in France, but various legends have been coming out in support of PSG as a French club vying for the Champions League. “I’m going to watch the final, of course. Even me, who’s from Marseille… the French team needs to win,” said Marseille-born Zinedine Zidane on the final. Even OM’s goalscorer from the 1993 final, Basile Boli, has also evoked his support for Les Parisiens. “Yes, my heart is Blue and White, absolutely. But I’m behind PSG, because representing France is something important to me.”Yet that won’t matter for the majority in the Phocéen City, who’ll be seeking to once more goad the phrase “À jamais les premiers” (Forever the first) over their rivals from the French capital once more.
