Liverpool are still waiting to see the best of some of their summer signings.

Hugo Ekitike has got off to a flying start but others are still playing themselves into form. The biggest example of this is Florian Wirtz - the £116m Germany playmaker who signed from Bayer Leverkusen.

As he gradually comes to terms with life in the Premier League there is little doubt that the 22-year-old will prove to be an inspired signing in time.

And Wirtz wasn’t the only player sporting director Richard Hughes acquired from Leverkusen over the summer.

Frimpong loses place to Bradley and Szoboszlai

Jeremie Frimpong, 24, arrived from the deposed German champions for a fee of around £29.5m.

Following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Reds needed extra quality on the right side - with the Dutchman proving to be one of the best wing-backs around throughout his time at the BayArena.

Frimpong started the season at right-back for the Anfield side but it’s become apparent that is going to be a problem position for Arne Slot - in the short term at least.

It doesn’t appear that Frimpong has done enough to convince his compatriot to use him as a regular starter at right-back - as he is sharing duties with both Conor Bradley and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Frimpong stars on the wing for Netherlands

But Frimpong delivered a timely reminder of his quality on Thursday night in the colours of his national team. Crucially Frimpong played high and wide - on the Dutch right wing.

He is categorically not a right-back in Ronald Koeman’s system - enjoying a fruitful combination with Inter’s Denzel Dumfries down that flank.

Slot should take plenty of notice of Frimpong’s capabilities in the attacking shape - a position he played against Galatasaray in the Champions League defeat last week.

Koeman: Frimpong a real threat

Across his 67 minutes in the Oranje’s 4-0 win over Malta in FIFA World Cup qualifying, Frimpong managed to complete six of his seven dribbles attempted, hit 18 of 23 passes on target, made five crosses, won seven of his 10 ground duels and even had a shot on target.

All figures come courtesy of Sofascore.

"I thought Frimpong was a real threat," Dutch manager Koeman told the media after.

Frimpong is not - and may not ever be - a natural fit at right-back having played wing-back and winger for Leverkusen. And once again he demonstrated his class and capability in his favoured position.
