Jürgen Klopp may have to reshuffle his roster sooner than planned. Following the 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in the Nations League opener, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz are at risk of missing the upcoming home match against Greece. The national team coach is therefore already considering call-ups.

Musiala was injured just before kickoff in Amsterdam. The Bayern star felt muscle discomfort during warm-ups and was therefore unable to take the field at the last minute. Havertz also went down during the match, forcing the Arsenal pro to be substituted after just over half an hour.

After the game, Klopp confirmed that both players are undergoing further examination. “It’s a muscle issue for both of them. They’re both getting MRIs. I hope it’s nothing serious and that the guys will be back in action relatively quickly. They’re probably out for Sunday’s game.”

Klopp Announces New Plans

This means the new German national team coach may be without two key offensive players for his first home game. On Sunday, Germany will face Greece in Augsburg.

After the draw in Amsterdam, Klopp made it clear that he might have to adjust his lineup. “We’ll wait and see for now. But it’s clear that we’ll have to rethink things. We can do it, and we should,” explained the 59-year-old.

The national team coach is allowed to name 20 field players and three goalkeepers for each Nations League match. If Musiala and Havertz are indeed sidelined, the current roster would consist of only 22 available players.

For Musiala, the situation is particularly bitter. The 23-year-old was originally supposed to remain with the DFB for the entire international break to regain his training and match rhythm after his extended layoff. Whether that’s still possible following his thigh issues now depends on the results of the MRI scan.

Burkardt and Woltemade could return sooner

Two potential replacements are already part of Klopp’s plans anyway. Jonathan Burkardt and Nick Woltemade were originally scheduled for the second half of the international break.

Both forwards were not expected to join the DFB squad until the matches against Serbia on October 1 in Munich and the return match against Greece on October 4. Due to the injuries to Musiala and Havertz, this plan could now change.

Burkardt or Woltemade could already be part of the squad for the match against Greece. Klopp apparently does not intend to make a final decision until the diagnoses for his two injured attacking players are available.

For the national team coach, this marks the first major personnel challenge immediately following his first international match. At least one thing seems clear: Klopp is not currently planning to use Musiala and Havertz on Sunday.
