By the time the final whistle blew at the Spotify Camp Nou against Villarreal, there was little doubt about the moment that tilted the match in Barcelona’s favour.

It did not come at kick-off, nor after the first goal. It came in the 58th minute.

With the score at 2-1 and Villarreal still alive in the contest, Hansi Flick made a decisive substitution.

Pedri stepped onto the pitch, replacing Dani Olmo. What followed was not dramatic in appearance, but it was decisive in effect.

Villarreal midfielder Santi Comesana later admitted what many had already seen

“With Pedri, the game stopped being back and forth. Pedri calmed everything down. He took the ball away from us,” he said.

A look at Pedri’s masterclass performance

In just 38 minutes of action, Pedri recorded 57 interventions, immediately becoming Barcelona’s main reference point in possession.

He attempted 55 passes and completed 52 of them, missing only three. That level of accuracy slowed the tempo, removed risk and forced Villarreal to chase shadows.

His influence extended into the final third. He delivered the assist that allowed Lamine Yamal to complete his hat-trick, and he also produced a precise through ball to Jules Kounde in the move that ended with Robert Lewandowski finding the net.

In total, he created two clear scoring opportunities, both leading directly to goals.

Pedri’s work without the ball was equally effective. He completed the only dribble he attempted, won his sole tackle and made four recoveries, showing full commitment despite limited minutes.

Crucially, there were no visible signs of the right hamstring issue that had sidelined him. Instead, he looked sharp, composed and physically ready.

Barcelona’s structure visibly improved once he entered the match. Possession became longer, transitions were better managed and Villarreal’s confidence faded.

If this display is any indication, Pedri’s return has arrived at the perfect moment.

With a crucial Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid on the horizon, Barcelona once again look like a different side when their midfield conductor takes charge.
