Throughout last summer, Brazilian international Wesley was linked with a potential move from Flamengo to Manchester City. Publication Coluna do Fla reported that City were intending on submitting a bid to sign versatile full-back Wesley from Flamengo last summer. But that move never eventuated. Wesley instead signed for AS Roma last summer, and City focused on other areas of their squad to improve. Heading into this summer, City do look set to be in the market for a right-back. Once again, Wesley has been named as a potential target for Pep Guardiola’s side. Given how well Wesley has performed for Roma, and his obvious ability to play in multiple positions, the Brazilian international may be a player that City focus on signing next summer.

Manchester City are reportedly considering making a summer move to sign Wesley.

Steve Pearson has relayed a report from Brazilian publication Netfla, for TeamTalk, that Manchester City has their eyes on making a summer move for Roma’s versatile right-back Wesley. Furthermore, Pearson reports that City are preparing a €50 million offer to sign the Brazilian international. It is also included in Pearson’s report that Pep Guardiola has ‘big plans’ for Wesley if City were to sign him next summer. It is also included in the TeamTalk report that Roma would prefer not to sell Wesley next summer. But if a sizable offer comes in for the Brazilian international, they may accept the bid to help them improve their squad in other areas.

Wesley has shown this season that he is well-suited to playing in Europe.

As mentioned above, Manchester City were heavily linked with a summer move for Wesley. The question mark surrounding Wesley was whether his impressive form for Flamengo could translate to playing in Europe. Perhaps that uncertainty persuaded City not to move for Wesley last summer. Since signing for Roma, Wesley has shown that he can succeed in Europe. He has impressed for Roma, and it appears that City are keeping a close eye on his progress. He has quickly become a key player for the Serie A side and has quickly adapted to life playing in Italy. It would seem that Wesley would have no trouble making the step up to play for Manchester City based on his strong displays for Roma this season.

There is, however, another side to Wesley’s game that could appeal to Pep Guardiola and Manchester City. City do need to sign another right-back to add competition for Matheus Nunes. Wesley could definitely do that, given that he is a right-back by trade. The Brazilian international is a versatile player, given the roles he has played for Roma this season. Wesley has played high up on the left and right wing for Roma throughout this season. Like many Brazilian full-backs, Wesley is an attacking weapon. His game is suited to playing higher up the pitch and you do sense that Pep Guardiola could utilize Wesley’s versatility to devastating effect. Wesley’s versatility does add an interesting layer to City’s supposed interest in signing him.

Final thoughts.

Manchester City are once again linked with a potential move for Wesley. The Brazilian international has had an impressive season for Roma, and with his technical ability and versatility, he could be a player who would add an interesting dynamic to Pep Guardiola’s squad. He could slot in at right-back and also give Pep Guardiola the option to pursue other tactical tweaks given the versatility that Wesley has to play in multiple roles.
